What Are the Benefits of Using Lip Balm with CBD?

CBD oil lip balm is a hot new product right now and more and more satisfied customers swear by its benefits. Unlike traditional lip balms, a quality CBD hemp oil-infused lip balm comes with added benefits thanks to CBD’s anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

But before diving into CBD lip balm benefits and why you should turn it into your go-to product especially in very cold or windy conditions, let’s see why CBD, cannabidiol, is (still) so controversial.

*A quick note: If you’re simply looking for a great organic CBD lip balm with no THC or marijuana, I’d highly recommend Kino’s Coconut Mango flavor. You can buy it here.

The CBD Controversy

Hemp and cannabis-derived beauty products have gained more and more traction in recent years as the American public has become more accustomed to CBD oil’s perks when applied topically. Plus, in less than a decade, tremendous progress has been made toward hemp farming legalization. State by state, law makers are embracing the benefits of CBD both to the body and the economy.

In 2014, when the U.S. Congress passed legislation that allowed state farmers to grow and harvest hemp locally through pilot programs, CBD oil products started to permeate faster the U.S. market as manufacturers no longer had to rely exclusively on hemp imports.

With the 2018 farm bill, federal lawmakers lifted the 82-year-old ban on hemp farming in the United States, opening a market that it’s expected to jump to 22 billion in the next three years.

However, despite their growing popularity, CBD hemp oil-based beauty products are still being frowned upon because people confuse hemp-derived CBD with its more potent cousin, the marijuana-derived CBD.

Even though hemp and marijuana belong to the same plant family, Cannabis Sativa, and have almost the same looks, industrial hemp comes with no THC or less than .3% per dry unit, which means that it won’t help you get high no matter how much you smoke or munch on it.

So the good news is that adding a CBD chapstick to your lips won’t mess with your perception of reality even if you are into the not-so-healthy habit of constantly licking your lips.

Chapped and Dry Lips: Causes and Best Treatment

Chapped, or severely dry, lips are usually caused by these factors:

Exposure to environmental factors, like very low temperatures, wind, or very dry and hot weather. These factors are unavoidable, so using CBD lip balm is our best way of combating them.
Dehydration, which means that you do not drink enough water for your body to function properly; dehydration can also be caused by excess alcohol consumption, sugary drinks, too much coffee, and drinks packed with tannins, like red wine, teas, and some types of fruit juice.
Nutrient deficiency – Vitamin B deficiency might explain cracked lips, rashes, and dry spots on the skin. Also, iron and zinc deficiencies are often behind chapped or unusually dry lips.
UV damage – Wearing no sun protection on your lips can lead to inflammation and dryness.
• Some drugs and supplements, like chemotherapy medication, antihistamines, or supplementation with retinoids and lithium.
Constantly licking your lips – which can only make dry lips worse.
Underlying medical condition – Split lips, especially in the corners might be a tell-tale sign of an underlying medical condition known as angular cheilitis.

Leaving dry and chapped lips untreated can lead to excess flaking, inflammation, soreness, swelling and even bleeding. In addition, there are diseases and ailments that can drastically affect the moisture levels and dryness in your lips.

In less severe cases, cracked and dry lips can be fixed by avoiding the said risk factors and promoting recovery through simple home remedies, such as aloe vera and a high-quality lip balm packed with strategically formulated ingredients to keep your lips healthy.

However, not all lip balms are created equal, and some of them can do more harm than good. In some cases, when the thin layer of product evaporates from the lips, the lip balm can make lips even drier, and you’ll feel the urge to reapply it compulsively. This is the case with most subpar lip balms.

Fortunately, that is not the case with CBD lip balms, as the CBD oil will seal moisture in your lips, preventing them from becoming dry or flaky.

CBD Lip Balm Benefits

Now let’s look at the CDB lip balm benefits. So, what does a CBD lip balm do and what makes it shine bright among conventional lip balms?

Besides leaving your lips smooth and shiny without getting them greasy, a quality CBD lip balm can also help alleviate tenderness and inflammation associated with dry, flaky, and cracked lips. There have also been reports by numerous users about using the lip balm on superficial cuts, which helped them heal faster. Kino’s lip balm is also packed with natural oils that help combat inflection that might occur in cuts or breaks in the skin.

Also, thanks to its healing-promoting properties, a CBD lip balm can work wonders on severely chapped lips with just a few applications, a feat unlikely to be pulled off by traditional lip balms.

As an added bonus, CBD hemp oil is packed with vitamins A, C, and E which promote healthy and glowing skin while slowing down the aging processes.

Besides the key ingredient– whole plant extract of hemp, our Organic Coconut Mango CBD Lip Balm is packed with moisturizing, soothing, and hydrating organic oils and plant butters that will keep your lips soft and silky smooth all day long. Because lips are so sensitive, we went out of our way to make sure our lip balm is the highest quality CBD lip balm on the market. It’s organic, vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free (Leaping Bunny Certified), toxic-free, solvent-free, herbicide-free, pesticide-free, chemical fertilizer-free, sulfate-free, paraben-free, phthalates-free, and phosphates-free.

It is worth noting that lips lack oil glands, which means that they won’t produce protective oils on their own. This is why we have added organic coconut oil, organic jojoba seed oil, and organic argan oil – to name just a few – to our CBD lip balm to ensure that your lips stay hydrated throughout the day without the need of constantly reapplying the product.

What’s more, all our ingredients are sourced with the well-being of the environment in mind and the quality of each individual ingredient is top-notch so that both your body and the planet get the proper treatment they need.

One common problem with most commercial CBD lip balms is their weird taste or smell. Fortunately, we were able to address that issue too by enriching our lip balm with organic mango flavor oil to offer it a subtle mango taste and smell, which makes it one of the best-tasting lip balms with CBD on the market.

Also, the laundry list of organic plant oils and butters in our product is proof that you won’t put on your lips or in your body anything that is non-natural or toxic.

You can buy our Organic CBD Lip Balm below, or check out our full CBD product line here! We spent months formulating the Kino lip balm until our whole team agreed it was the best-tasting chapstick we’ve ever tried.

Best CBD Lip Balms

We include products we think are useful for our readers. If you buy through links on this page, we may earn a small commission. Here’s our process.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t produce a “high.”

However, it does have therapeutic effects that may benefit the skin. Some people use topical CBD products to relieve pain, inflammation, and irritation. Topical products can include things like body lotions and creams, and even lip balms designed to soothe dry, chapped lips.

When it comes to choosing a CBD product, it’s essential to pay close attention to safety and quality. This is especially important for lip balm since it’s easy to ingest the product without realizing it. To help narrow down your choices, we’ve listed seven of the best CBD lip balms available online. Where available, we’ve included special discount codes for our readers.

CBD Glossary

  • Full-spectrum CBD: contains all cannabinoids of the cannabis plant, including CBD and THC
  • Broad-spectrum CBD: contains a mix of cannabinoids, usually without THC
  • CBD isolate: pure isolated CBD, without other cannabinoids or THC

We chose these lip balms based on criteria we think are good indicators of safety, quality, and transparency. Each product in this article:

  • is made by a company that provides proof of third-party testing by an ISO 17025-compliant lab
  • is made with U.S.-grown hemp
  • contains no more than 0.3 percent THC, according to the certificate of analysis (COA)
  • is free of pesticides, heavy metals, and molds, according to the COA

We also considered:

  • company certifications and manufacturing processes
  • product potency
  • overall ingredients
  • indicators of user trust and brand reputation, such as:
    • customer reviews
    • whether the company has been subject to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warning letter
    • whether the company makes any unsupported health claims

The research on CBD is still evolving. Although there haven’t been studies about the specific effects of CBD on lips, research has found benefits from CBD for skin care in general.

A 2014 study determined that CBD has anti-inflammatory and sebostatic effects, meaning it can reduce sebum production. This could be useful for controlling inflammation and acne around your lips.

The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD may also help conditions like eczema and psoriasis, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. And a 2019 study determined that CBD-infused ointment may help the scarring associated with skin inflammation.

CBD could also ease pain, according to research from 2018. Pain is caused by the body’s inflammatory response.

If your lips are painful or inflamed, applying CBD lip balm may help. But more research is needed to understand the benefits of CBD for the lips.

It’s important to keep in mind that lip balms contain other ingredients besides CBD. These ingredients also have therapeutic properties. It’s not clear if CBD offers more benefits than these ingredients would alone.

Currently, the FDA doesn’t guarantee the safety, effectiveness, or quality of over-the-counter (OTC) CBD products. However, in order to protect public health, they can take action against CBD companies that make unfounded health claims.

Since the FDA doesn’t regulate CBD products in the same way they regulate drugs or dietary supplements, companies sometimes mislabel or misrepresent their products. That means it’s especially important to do your own research and find a quality product. Here’s what to look for:

Potency

The ideal level of potency depends on your preferences. It might take time to determine what best suits your needs.

Most lip balms contain 15 to 25 mg of CBD per tube. If you’d like a more potent product, look for a lip balm with 50 mg or more.

CBD type

The type of CBD will determine what cannabinoids are in a product.

You can pick from:

  • Full-spectrum CBD, which has all the naturally occurring cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, including some THC. This is said to create an entourage effect. Federally legal products contain less than 0.3 percent THC.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD, which contains all the naturally available cannabinoids except THC.
  • CBD isolate, which is pure CBD. It has been isolated from other cannabinoids and contains no THC.

The optimal choice depends on your preferences and the compounds you’d like to use.

Quality

Reputable brands are transparent about where their cannabis is grown. They’re also happy to provide lab results, which show that the product has been third-party tested.

You can find testing results on a COA. The COA should show you the cannabinoid profile, which will let you confirm that the product actually contains what it says it does. It should also confirm that the product is free of pesticides, heavy metals, and mold.

Some companies provide COAs on their website or in the product description. Others provide the COA with the product shipment or through a QR code on the packaging. It’s best to look for a COA that’s recent, meaning within the past 12 months, and batch-specific.

Occasionally, you may have to email the company for the COA. If the brand doesn’t reply or refuses to provide information, avoid buying their products.

It’s also ideal to use products made with organic hemp grown in the United States. Hemp grown in the United States is subject to agricultural regulations and can’t contain more than 0.3 percent THC.

Other ingredients

Since lip balms are directly applied on your lips, you’ll inevitably ingest a small amount throughout the day. Therefore, it’s best to use lip balms with natural and organic ingredients.

Read the CBD label for potential allergens. If you’re allergic to an ingredient, avoid the product.

Claims

Be cautious of products that claim to cure a condition. CBD is meant to be used as an adjunct treatment, rather than a miracle “fix.”

Price point

Traditional lip balms usually cost less than $10. CBD lip balms can often range from $3 to $25.

If a CBD lip product is more than $10, check the other factors on this list. Consider if it has any unique ingredients or traits that validate its high price point.

When trying a new CBD lip balm, slowly introduce it into your routine. This is always a good idea, even with lip balms that don’t contain CBD.

Apply a light layer to your lips. Check for any irritation or redness. If you don’t develop a reaction, you can continue using the product.

A CBD lip balm, like a regular lip balm, can be used multiple times a day. You can apply it whenever your lips need a moisturizing pick-me-up.

CBD is generally considered safe. But some people may experience side effects like:

  • fatigue
  • anxiety
  • diarrhea
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in weight

It’s also possible to develop an allergy to cannabinoids.

Talk to your doctor or a knowledgeable cannabis clinician before using any CBD product. This is especially important if you’re taking medication or using prescription skin care treatments. CBD may interact with some medications, especially those with a grapefruit warning.

If your lips are constantly dry and irritated, CBD lip balm may be an option. CBD has anti-inflammatory, soothing properties that might provide relief.

Choose a lip balm made with high-quality, lab-tested CBD. Always check the ingredients to make sure you’re not allergic to the formula. Avoid using CBD products that claim to cure any condition.

Is CBD Legal? Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel. Keep in mind that nonprescription CBD products are not FDA-approved, and may be inaccurately labeled.
