Recent studies point toward CBD as an effective neuroprotectant. There’s some promising research that this compound can make the brain heal faster from concussions. The University of Miami conducted a massive study regarding cannabinoids as a treatment for concussions. The university received about $16 million in grants to conduct the research. The partnership research aims to propel CBD as a potential treatment by using two combinations of drugs. The scientists believed that the combination would enhance the healing process, strengthen the immune response, and reduce brain inflammation in a big way.

In 2018, the reports found out that the pre-pilot study showed an improvement in many animals’ cognitive functions compared to those who have undergone a single treatment. The therapy was made up of Dexanabinol and cannabidiol, which is the synthetic cannabinoid. It’s believed that the cannabinoids are responsible for neuroprotection, and they act as anticonvulsants to the body. As of the moment, more studies are being conducted for other applications of cannabis like treatments for strokes, cancer, or head injuries.

CBD as a Protectant for the Brain

A team of researchers in 2017 conducted studies with mice with traumatic brain injury as the subjects. When they were treated with CBD, they showed faster recovery, and they became significantly better after some time. These kinds of studies are opening a lot of opportunities for clinical trials in the near future.

The World Health Organization reported in 2017 that CBD might have therapeutic benefits. The report showed the neuroprotectant effects of cannabidiol. Comprehensive literature reviews have shown that cannabinoids can have therapeutic benefits in treating headaches and migraines. Abstract

Cannabidiol (CBD) has been generating increasing interest in medicine due to its therapeutic properties and an apparent lack of negative side effects. Research has suggested that high dosages of CBD can be taken acutely and chronically with little to no risk. This review focuses on the neuroprotective effects of a CBD, with an emphasis on its implications for recovering from a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) or concussion. CBD has been shown to influence the endocannabinoid system, both by affecting cannabinoid receptors and other receptors involved in the endocannabinoid system such as vanilloid receptor 1, adenosine receptors, and 5-hydroxytryptamine via cannabinoid receptor-independent mechanisms. Concussions can result in many physiological consequences, potentially resulting in post-concussion syndrome. While impairments in cerebrovascular and cardiovascular physiology following concussion have been shown, there is unfortunately still no single treatment available to enhance recovery. CBD has been shown to influence the blood brain barrier, brain-derived neurotrophic factors, cognitive capacity, the cerebrovasculature, cardiovascular physiology, and neurogenesis, all of which have been shown to be altered by concussion. CBD can therefore potentially provide treatment to enhance neuroprotection by reducing inflammation, regulating cerebral blood flow, enhancing neurogenesis, and protecting the brain against reactive oxygen species. Double-blind randomized controlled trials are still required to validate the use of CBD as medication following mild TBIs, such as concussion.
