glaucoma and cbd oil

Is CBD Oil Good For Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, nearly 3 million Americans suffer from the eye condition. Surprisingly, half of them are unaware until the condition is severe. Glaucoma is prevalent among African-Americans. This article will look at how CBD oil can help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with glaucoma.

What is Glaucoma?

Also known as the “sneak thief of sight,” glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by abnormal pressure in the eye – known as intraocular pressure (IOP). The eye produces a fluid known as aqueous humor that drains in the eye continuously. If the fluid doesn’t circulate properly, it builds up, causing increased pressure in the eyeball. Also, glaucoma may be caused by the reduced blood supply to the optic nerve fibres. If not treated in the early stages, it may lead to a total loss of vision.

Symptoms of glaucoma
  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing halos around bright lights
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Eye pain
  • Redness in the eye

Common Types of Glaucoma

  1. Open-Angle Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma, with nearly 90% of all glaucoma cases. The condition occurs when the aqueous humor gets blocked and doesn’t circulate properly. This leads to increased pressure build-up. Usually, there are no warning signs for several years. However, if the condition is detected in its early stages, it can be treated.

  1. Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma is a relatively rare condition whereby intraocular pressure rises rapidly without any warning. This form of glaucoma happens when the drainage canals get blocked since the iris is not wide, like for a healthy eye. Therefore, the pupil enlarges too much or too fast.

Could CBD oil be the holistic treatment glaucoma patients have been waiting for?

CBD for Glaucoma: Can it Work?

Keep in mind that there’s no permanent cure for glaucoma. In fact, the study of the effects of CBD Hemp Oil for glaucoma is in its infancy. However, the majority of the studies showed that cannabis or stains with high THC content might be a viable and effective treatment for glaucoma. Cannabis reduces intraocular pressure, the primary cause of glaucoma.

That said, it means you’ll be high almost every time. While this may be thrilling to some people, it may not be pleasing to others. This is where CBD (cannabidiol) comes in. CBD is the non-psychoactive compound of the marijuana plant, and some studies suggest that it may be useful in treating glaucoma with the help of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Glaucoma and the Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system is a complex cell-signaling system that controls the body’s operational functions such as response to pain, mood, appetite, sleep, and immune response. Regarding glaucoma, the cannabinoid receptors regulate intraocular pressure.

Researchers are hoping to create medications for glaucoma patients from cannabinoids like CBD that can target ocular issues to reduce intraocular pressure. With this, it can help manage retina cells from permanent damage that leads to loss of sight.

Over the past few decades, there has been evidence that CBD oil may help treat glaucoma. According to a 1979 study published by the International Journal of Pharmacology and Biopharmacology, examine the effects of CBD oil on 16 patients with open-angle glaucoma. After administering CBD oil on glaucoma patients, there was a reduction in blood pressure. As a result, a decrease in intraocular pressure – the primary cause of glaucoma.

Final Thoughts on CBD for Glaucoma

When CBD is administered properly, it could potentially treat glaucoma. CBD vaso-relaxant properties could increase the blood flow in the ocular tissues. Also, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD have the potential to provide relief for glaucoma.

CBD in marijuana may worsen glaucoma, raise eye pressure

Research in mice suggests over-the-counter substance could possess unknown side effects

One of the most commonly proposed uses of medical marijuana is to treat glaucoma.

But a study from researchers at Indiana University has found that a major chemical component in the substance appears to worsen the primary underpinning of the disease: a rise in pressure inside the eye.

The chemical that causes this rise in pressure is cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that is increasingly marketed to consumers in products such as oil, gummies, creams and health food. It is also approved in many states as a treatment for conditions such as pediatric epilepsy.

The study was reported Dec. 14 in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

“This study raises important questions about the relationship between the primary ingredients in cannabis and their effect on the eye,” said Alex Straiker, an associate scientist in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, who led the study. “It also suggests the need to understand more about the potential undesirable side effects of CBD, especially due to its use in children.”

The study, which was conducted in mice, specifically found that CBD caused an increase in pressure inside the eye of 18 percent for at least four hours after use.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient of marijuana, was found to effectively lower pressure in the eye, as has been previously reported. But the study found that the use of CBD in combination with THC blocked this effect.

Specifically, the study found that male mice experienced a drop in eye pressure of nearly 30 percent eight hours after exposure to THC alone. A lower pressure drop of 22 percent was also observed after four hours in male mice.

The effect was weaker in female mice. This group experienced a pressure drop of only 17 percent after four hours. No difference in eye pressure was measured after eight hours.

The results suggest that females may be less affected by THC, though it isn’t clear whether this extends to the substance’s psychoactive effects.

“This difference between males and females — and the fact that CBD seems to worsen eye pressure, the primary risk factor for glaucoma — are both important aspects of this study,” Straiker said. “It’s also notable that CBD appears to actively oppose the beneficial effects of THC.”

By comparing the effect of these substances on mice without specific neuroreceptors affected by THC and CBD, the IU researchers were also able to identify the two specific neuroreceptors — named CB1 and GPR18 — by which the first substance lowered pressure inside the eye.

“There were studies over 45 years ago that found evidence that THC lowers pressure inside the eye, but no one’s ever identified the specific neuroreceptors involved in the process until this study,” Straiker said. “These results could have important implications for future research on the use of cannabis as a therapy for intraocular pressure.”

A study has found that CBD — a major chemical component in marijuana — appears to increase pressure inside the eye of mice, suggesting the use of the substance in the treatment of glaucoma may actually worsen the condition.

CBD Oil in Illinois

  • Share via:

CBD was first discovered in Illinois. The discovery was made in 1940 by Roger Adams. The state has sought to maintain its pioneering ways where CBD and marijuana are concerned.

Today, this is one of the states where recreational marijuana is legal. The law, as of January 2020, allows people to smoke recreational cannabis as long as they don’t do it in public spaces.

Medical marijuana, of which CBD is a central component, is usually freely traded anywhere recreational marijuana is legal. Keep reading to find out more about CBD in Illinois.

Is CBD Oil legal in Illinois?

According to Illinois CBD laws, the simple answer to this question is yes. CBD is legal in Illinois. The law in Illinois is one of the most considerate rules for the user in the United States.

While the state can be commended for its marijuana laws, the situation has not always been as it is. The first recorded law on marijuana use in the state was the 1931 prohibition of marijuana use in the state.

In 1978, the state senate passed a law known as the Cannabis Control Act, which legalized medical marijuana. This approach was quite progressive, and Illinois was among the first states to take this step.

Although medical marijuana was technically legal, recreational cannabis remained entirely illegal. This meant that the government needed to put in place rules that would govern the use of marijuana in the state. These rules were not formulated and, therefore, medical marijuana though technically legal, remained unused.

This state of affairs changed in 2013 when the state legislature passed the first operational legislation on medical marijuana. A user can access medical marijuana from any of the state-sanctioned marijuana clinics across the state.

While all these bills were being passed, there was no law legalizing the growth of industrial hemp. The Illinois Industrial Hemp Act of 2018 remedied that situation. The law allows a person who needs medical marijuana, including CBD but is far from a clinic to grow their industrial hemp and then get their CBD from there.

By law, all CBD used in Illinois must be grown in the state. The state government licenses hemp farms from which the CBD and other medical marijuana products on sale in the state are processed.

How to Get CBD Oil in Illinois

Until recently, how one got CBD depended on the type of CBD oil they wanted to buy. If the product you want was extracted from hemp that has 0.3% THC, you could get it over the counter without needing consent from anyone.

Initially, it was necessary to get a medical marijuana card endorsed by a doctor if you wanted to buy CBD oil with high THC content. This was necessary because the law at the federal level doesn’t allow the growth of industrial hemp with more than 0.3% THC.

This situation changed in Illinois soon after Governor Pritzker, who is a prominent pro-legalization advocate, was elected into office. In June 2019, supported by an agreeable state legislature, the government legalized marijuana with any level of THC for recreational use.

There are two restrictions to the use of recreational marijuana; you have to be at least 21 to buy it, and you can’t smoke or vape it in public. ‘Public’ doesn’t only mean the streets; it also means bars, clubs, and other entertainment joints.

You can, however, use other formulations of THC dominant marijuana such as edibles , capsules , and oils in public. These formulations are allowed because they don’t cause a third-hand intake of THC weed.

The law legalizing the use of recreational marijuana took effect on 1 st January 2020. These new regulations automatically made it unnecessary for anyone who is over 21 to carry medical marijuana cards if their health needs are for high THC products.

The illegality of smoking and vaping any product with more than 0.3% THC in public remains even in the case of medical marijuana. You can only use these two intake methods privately.

Where to buy CBD Oil in Illinois

You can also buy CBD oil online. This may be the most convenient way to get your CBD. The online purchase gives you access to a wide variety of products from which to choose. There are many manufacturers of excellent reputation whose products you can access online.

There are two critical challenges with online shopping; one of them is that there is such a wide variety of products that an inexperienced buyer may get confused as they choose. The other possible challenge is the difficulty in determining the quality of the products.

When buying online, you should only buy from reputable vendors. Such vendors usually get their products tested by reliable third-party labs that display the contents of their products for customers to see. This way, you get to see what you will be taking into your body.

Another important consideration when choosing an online vendor is the efficiency of their shipping system. If you find multiple customers complain about an inefficient shipping system, you are probably better off choosing another vendor to avoid disappointment.

Our recommendation for a CBD vendor that can satisfy all of mentioned requirements is Sabaidee CBD – a brand with public lab tests, and an excellent shipping and return service, not to mention their always-on-top products coming with various strengths and flavors.

This article will explain everything about CBD oil in Illinois: its legal status, where and how to buy CBD in Illinois, and 2020 updated news about it.

CBD Oil Illinois: Is It Legal And Where To Buy [2021 Update]

Until recently, getting CBD in Illinois highly depended on the type of CBD oil one wanted to buy. You could only get CBD over the counter if the product were extracted from hemp with less than 0.3% THC. Before, you needed a medical cannabis card from your doctor if you needed to buy CBD oil with any THC.

Things changed in the Land of Lincoln soon after a prominent pro-legalization advocate, Governor Pritzker, got elected into office supported by the state legislature in June 2019. They legalized marijuana for recreational use. Illinois officially became the 11 th state to allow the use of marijuana by adults in January 2020. Though you are required to be over 21 years to obtain recreational marijuana and avoid smoking or vaping in public, this made cannabis easily accessible to the residents of Illinois. It was also in this state that Roger Adams discovered CBD in 1940. However, this still said nothing about the legal status of CBD in this Prairie State.

Is CBD oil Legal in Illinois?

Yes. CBD oil is legal in the Land of Lincoln. Considering that medical cannabis has been legal in this state since the 2018 Farm Bill was passed and the General Assembly of the state passed the Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Pilot Program Act back in 2013. They have since taken approaches to legalize hemp and hemp-derived products, including making CBD legal.

However, it wasn’t until recently when the restriction on the cultivation of industrial hemp for research purposes was lifted. The state passed the Industrial Hemp Act, SB 2298, in August 2018, which allowed the cultivation of industrial hemp for commercial purposes. This made the CBD market expand in the state.

This resulted in the implementation of the medical marijuana program under the Bill, which made Illinois the 20 th state to legalize CBD. Hence, CBD oil or CBD products with no more than 0.3% THC are allowed in this state.

However, there is a catch! While the state allows possession of marijuana in small unquantified amounts, CBD with THC that exceeds 0.3% is considered illegal. Like many states, Illinois considered revising their approach to hemp and hemp-derived products after the 2018 Farm Bill became law. THC is what is believed to cause a superficial high associated with cannabis products.

A set of rules were adopted in early 2019 by the Illinois Department of Agriculture to outline the legality of hemp-derived CBD oil, including CBD products derived from hemp. Under the adopted rules, the sale and transfer of hemp products should comply with the federal and state definition of what is legal within and outside of the state.

The state also issued a list of illnesses that would qualify patients to use CBD in Illinois, including:

  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular diseases
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetic complications
  • Infection
  • Inflammatory bowel syndrome
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Pain
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Psychosis
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Huntington’s disease

This was after the Expert Committee on Drug Dependence of WHO released a study in 2017 that found that CBD products could benefit patients diagnosed with these conditions with no effects indicating that they could potentially become addicted or dependent on it.

Illinois also allows state universities to cultivate and research industrial hemp. However, all CBD products used in Illinois should be grown in the state, by law. Hence, hemp farmers need to acquire a license from the government in order to cultivate hemp legally.

Hemp cultivation licenses are considered valid for up to three years after the date it was issued. You are ineligible for a cultivation license if you have a prior felony to a controlled substance ten years before your application.

4 Sativa CBD Flower Strains To Buy In 2020

For people who have savored the many flavors and feelings of cannabis for years, it’s clear that sativa and indica are in completely different categories. While it’s unclear whether Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica were actually different species, to begin with , two widely different categories of cannabis exist that deliver widely different results.

When it’s time to get up, go, and enjoy everything that daytime has to offer, there’s nothing better to reach for than some delicious, fruity cannabis buds. Even better, make getting fuzzy in the head optional—smoke the four Secret Nature CBD flowers in this list to enjoy all the nostalgic benefits of sativa without getting high.

What Is Sativa?

You already know what sativa does, but what makes a cannabis plant “sativa,” exactly, and what truly is the difference between sativa and indica? Let’s start by examining the growth cycle of Cannabis sativa , which is determined largely by the area where it grows in the wild.

Native to cold, arid plains and steppes, indica cannabis grows short and stocky, and it has a long growing season. Sativa cannabis, on the other hand, originally grew in more tropical climates, so it stretches upward toward the sun, bears thin, lanky colas, and matures faster than indica.

What is Cannabis Sativa?

Before we go any further, let’s clarify a point that commonly gets confused. Even though the hemp plant is called Cannabis sativa , not all cannabis strains are sativa-dominant. Over the years, the term “sativa” has come to be used to refer to hemp strains with certain attributes, and “indica” is used to refer to other strains.

Both sativa-dominant and indica-dominant cannabis strains, however, are the same species— Cannabis sativa . It might make things easier to call strains with sativa genetics strains “sativa-dominant” rather than just “sativa.”

Indica and sativa cannabis strains usually express different terpenes and flavonoids. Sativa strains, for instance, may have more limonene, a citrus-smelling terpene that’s also found in oranges, lemons, and limes. It’s the presence of this particular terpene more than any other that contributes to the “fruity” smell associated with most sativa-dominant strains.

What Does Sativa Do?

It’s unclear what causes the characteristic effects of sativa-dominant cannabis strains. Since both indica and sativa cannabis contain the same cannabinoids, it’s not as if there’s some undiscovered cannabis constituent making sativa-dominant strains hit differently than their indica cousins.

Lamentably, there’s very little research into the actual chemical differences between indica-dominant and sativa-dominant cannabis strains. When you look at Cannabis sativa flower as an interlocking mechanism of potent plant oils, however, it all starts to make sense.

The latest research indicates that cannabinoids and terpenes modulate each other as part of a phenomenon loosely referred to as the entourage effect . It appears that the various plant oils present in Cannabis sativa flower behave synergistically with one another to create effects that are strain-specific.

It’s entirely possible, for instance, that the uplifting, invigorating effects commonly associated with sativa-dominant cannabis are due to some unknown reaction between the dominant cannabinoid and limonene. More research is necessary to get to the bottom of this fascinating question.

How To Tell Indica From Sativa?

When they’re still growing, indica-dominant and sativa-dominant cannabis plants look markedly different. Indica plants have wider, purplish leaves, and sativa plants have a greener, finger-shaped leaves. While sativa-dominant cannabis grows tall and stretchy, indica grows short and squat.

In dried and cured nug form, indica and sativa cannabis can be distinguished from each other with the following criteria:

Shape

Indica nugs are usually rounder and denser than their sativa counterparts.

Color

While sativa nugs are often notably green with lots of orange hairs and even hints of yellow, indica buds are commonly darker green or purplish even though healthy indica flowers also frequently have orange hairs.

Aroma

Sativa cannabis smells fruity, hazy, or like gasoline, while indica nugs usually smell more piney or sweet.

Taste

While sativa buds usually taste fruity or like candy, indica cannabis might hit the palate with spicy or creamy overtones.

How To Pick The Right CBD Sativa Buds:

Now that you’re even more of an expert on the difference between sativa and indica than you were before, it’s time to touch on some of the main points you should consider as you choose the right sativa-dominant, low- THC buds :

Customer Reviews

Brands market themselves. That’s the nature of the business world. You can’t fully trust anyone who has their own agenda, however, which is why it’s better to look to your peers for guidance. When hundreds of individual reviewers have given a brand five-star accolades, it’s clear that they’re onto something.

Lab Reports

In the absence of meaningful regulation, CBD consumers are on their own when choosing the right products. Cannabis lab testing can be very useful when determining whether a CBD brand is high-quality, and lab reports are essential if you want to verify a product’s potency.

Brand Quality

How does the brand’s website look overall? Are the product pictures clean and attractive? Is the site copy bold and elegant? Success makes better products, so go with the company that exudes the most professionalism.

Best Hemp CBD Flower Strains: Top Brand of 2021

CBD oil is an increasingly popular hemp extract that many people use for its potential wellness benefits. But some people prefer CBD flower for its desirable effects like relaxation and pain relief. Here you can learn all about hemp flower and where to buy the best CBD strains.

What is CBD Flower?

CBD flower is taken directly from industrial hemp plants without the need for extensive extraction processes. These flower buds contain the same beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes found within CBD oil, but tend to elicit a stronger entourage effect.

Hemp flower is different than many other CBD products since it is trimmed from the stalks of hemp without any additional manufacturing or purification needed, which keeps all of the naturally occurring cannabinoids in tact.

What is the Best CBD Flower to Buy Online?

Compared to CBD oil, there are many more challenges facing the selling and distribution of hemp flower across the United States. For this reason, there’s a more narrow market for people that prefer to smoke hemp flower. This also means there are less suppliers to meet demand.

With that being said, we’ve found the best company that sells hemp flower.

Cheef Botanicals CBD Flower

Cheef Botanicals was founded by a group of cannabis enthusiasts to deliver high-quality, Colorado-grown hemp to the masses. Today they produce some of the highest quality, most potent CBD flower on the market.

All Cheef Botanicals products contain only the best organic vegan ingredients. They are also cruelty-free, non-GMO, gluten free and dairy free.

After Court Rules Dakota Access Pipeline Operating Illegally, Dems Demand Biden It Shut Down

By Jessica Corbett

Five Democratic lawmakers on Friday encouraged President Joe Biden to order an immediate shutdown of the Dakota Access pipeline after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit last week delivered a victory to the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe by ruling that DAPL is operating illegally.

The three-judge panel upheld a lower court’s ruling that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) violated the National Environmental Policy Act when it granted an easement for DAPL to cross a federal reservoir along the Missouri River, less than a mile from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

The court ordered a full environmental impact statement examining the threats posed by the oil pipeline. The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, as the Democrats’ letter to Biden notes, “rightfully fears an oil spill could disproportionately affect their drinking water, as well as hunting and fishing rights.”

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman Mike Faith said in a statement that “we are pleased that the D.C. Circuit affirmed the necessity of a full environmental review, and we look forward to showing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers why this pipeline is too dangerous to operate.”

Despite mandating the review, the panel did not order DAPL to stop operating. Jan Hasselman, the EarthJustice attorney representing Standing Rock, said after the ruling that “this pipeline is now operating illegally.”

“The appeals court put the ball squarely in the court of the Biden administration to take action,” Hasselman said. “And I mean shutting the pipeline down until this environmental review is completed.”

Five lawmakers are now backing that call: Reps. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-Calif.), Raul Ruiz (D-Calif.), and Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) as well as Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

The Democrats note that Biden has taken “bold early actions . to prioritize climate action and environmental justice,” including withdrawing permits for the Keystone XL pipeline.

In addition to urging him to “build on this promising start” by shutting down DAPL during the review, they detail some of the pipeline’s history, including the “egregious environmental racism” in 2016, when “North Dakota law enforcement officials violently removed protestors from the path of DAPL, many of them from the nearby Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.”

While former President Barack Obama—under whom Biden was vice president — denied DAPL permission to cross beneath Lake Oahe on unceded ancestral tribal lands, former President Donald Trump, the letter notes, “reversed course and granted the easement while ignoring the concerns of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.”

“As you consider how to proceed,” the Democrats write, “we encourage you to meet with members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and other impacted tribes to better understand how the DAPL affects their lands, treaty rights, and environmental priorities.”

“By shutting down this illegal pipeline, you can continue to show your administration values the environment and the rights of Indigenous communities more than the profits of outdated fossil fuel industries,” the letter adds. “This is a critical step towards righting the wrongs of the past and setting our nation on a path of environmental, climate, and social justice.”

As DeSmog noted Thursday, DAPL is facing more than just legal trouble: Westchester Fire Insurance Co. notified pipeline owner Energy Transfer in early January that it had lost a $250,000 “bond that Iowa, one of the four states it passes through, required the pipeline to maintain.”

The 1,172-mile underground pipeline, which began operating in June 2017, transports 570,000 barrels of oil per day from the Bakken formation in North Dakota, through South Dakota and Iowa, to a terminal in Illinois.

Attorney Carolyn Raffensperger, director of the Science and Health Network, told DeSmog it could be tricky for Energy Transfer to replace the lost insurance coverage, especially given the court-ordered review.

“It will be difficult because the bond holder will require the pipeline to comply with all legal requirements,” Raffensperger said. “If it is operating without a permit, any spill would be a big, big legal problem.”

Yosemite’s “Firefall” Is Back – But This Year You’ll Need Reservations

There are very few places that capture the essence of American beauty better than Yosemite National Park. Millions of people visit each year to explore its mountainous terrain, or to experience Yosemite’s unique natural wonders such as the giant sequoia groves or the hundreds of waterfalls that nourish the protected landscape.

One such waterfall takes the mainstage in mid-February as the park’s most popular winter attraction. Known as the “Firefall,” or Horsetail Falls during the spring and summer months, this waterfall glows fiery red in the wintertime as the sunset reflects off its waters. However, to see it in 2021 you’ll have to make reservations soon.

Starting February 8, Yosemite will put a reservation system in place for day use of the park. The park is taking extra steps to ensure social distancing protocols are followed and risks are minimized during COVID-19, and encourage visitors who want to see Firefall to book soon.

The expected viewing dates begin February 13th and end February 25th. Due to the short timeframe that the Firefall is visible, reservations are expected to book quickly.

For those unfamiliar with the Firefall, it is a bizarre and beautiful natural phenomenon that can only occur for two weeks out of the year. At sunset, the waterfall transforms from an icy shower to a glowing flame that appears to flow like lava from the heights of El Capitan. This occurs due to the unique angle of the waterfall against the sunset during mid-February.

Despite its massive appeal, the Firefall is actually quite elusive. In order for the illusion to occur, Horsetail Falls must be experiencing a clear Western sky, have enough snowfall the night before, and experience warm temperatures to melt the snow and sustain the waterfall. Due to the angle of the sunset against the waterfall, it can only occur for approximately two weeks in February, but a cloudy day or freezing temperatures can get in the way of the incredible display.

Not only are the Firefalls rare, but they’re also short-lived. The sunset will only be at the right angle for five to ten minutes, giving visitors a very short window to observe. However, those who have witnessed the Firefall believe it is always worth the effort.

Yosemite’s Firefall was first discovered in 1978 by photographer Galen Rowell. He was driving past Horsetail Falls at sunset, and witnessed the anomaly long enough to capture the first photos. After sharing them with a soon-to-be worldwide audience, Firefall became the #1 attraction at Yosemite during the month of February.

Since then, the natural wonder that occurs on Horsetail falls has become a global spectacle, coveted by photographers, artists, and nature enthusiasts alike. Thousands of people visit the park during mid-February each year solely to chase the elusive majesty of this waterfall at sunset.

Horsetail Fall is located over the eastern edge of El Capitan, which is not possible to reach by car. The closest parking is one and a half miles from the actual viewing site, so it is important to book your reservation and arrive early if you want to catch a glimpse of it at sunset.

CBD Oil for ?Non Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage 3

So we were truly shocked at the biopsy that the doctors did to my mother. She has Lymphoma and i didn’t really wanna believe it. She was still very much happy along with her friends being in numerous trips. Right now she’s bedridden eats through the NGT and has an oxygen mask on. I was thinking about giving her the CBD oil i mean i’ve been researching and hearing a lot of testimonials in the internet lately about this. Should i go for it? Thoughts about it?

  • Biopsy
  • CBD

I hope someone else may be able to answer this better than I can. The first port of call would be your mother’s doctor to ask whether it would conflict with treatment they are giving.

If they have no objection then you would have to research very carefully to find a quality product .

There are probably a lot of people out there trying to make a fast buck out of other peoples’ desperation. I would hazard a guess that the main benefits might be in symptom alleviation. Also it is quite expensive. Also dietary and exercise (when possible) changes are very important in building strength to withstand illness and treatment. Best wishes .

You have nothing to lose, it won’t cause any harm. I have been using it since my diagnosis in Jan 2017 on watch and wait and have been in remission since. Can I say it is the CBD, well no but you can’t say it isn’t either. It also helps with sleeping, joint pain etc.

Hi, not to bud in on this conversation.. I see you are on the watch and weight .. I have also been for a few years. I am struggling with that whole post cancer life. I battles for 7 years and was thankful to enter a risky treatment that saved my life. Sadly those years have taken a toll and it seems like every year is getting worse. Does the CBD truly help with pain? I feel like I am 90. I feel worse now then during treatment. My oncologist just suggested me try it.

I agree with you. I use CBD a Beautiful lady makes mine for free. It has helped my neropathy and neck back pain. I sleep better also. Had a scare this last month. So had pet scan and cat scan. Having biopsy tomorrow. But good thing I don’t have any swollen lymph nodes anywhere but left side of my neck. Had in peracardium area and chest wall left side neck before. I believe the CBD and the RSO that I use got ride of that. Only thing done Diff Rent since whach and wait in 2014. Does not hurt.

sorry to hear about your mother, lymphoma can sneak up on you without symptoms before you know it. I used (smoked) cannabis through out chemo treatments and it helped with nausea, sleeping and as an appetite stimulant. I discontinued smoking due to lung problems, and have been using CBD lately for help with sleeping. effects are very subtle as far as i can tell, but some people swear by it for pain, anxiety

CBD is more for treating nausea while on chemo. In this sense, it might relieve some symptoms, but it will not cure or slow the progression of the lymphoma. You didn’t say anything about the treatment she is receiving, her age or the stage of her lymphoma. Normally lymphoma responds well to chemo and Rituximab (Mabthera) .

It’s whatever the doctor needs we give it. I mean the prices are no joke(the medicine) i don’t think my mom can withstand the chemo at this point we really don’t know what to do tbh

Normally if it is not the very fast spreading lymphoma, there are signs like night sweats and swollen lymph glands, etc. It is not common for someone to become bedridden with an oxygen mask at the time that they are diagnosed. I think with lymphoma, you can never be too weak for chemo, because it needs to be treated aggressively. If your mom has the fast spreading, more aggressive type of lymphoma, it is actually easier to treat. The faster the lymphoma spreads, the better it responds to treatment. I would recommend her seeing an oncologist and getting into a treatment program as fast as possible.

So we were truly shocked at the biopsy that the doctors did to my mother. She has Lymphoma and i didn't really wanna believe it. She was still very much happy along with her friends being in numerous…

Introducing Chill: Our New CBD Gummy

I’m so excited to introduce you to the newest addition to the EVOLUTION_18 family: Chill. We developed this daily gummy using broad spectrum CBD (cannabidiol), derived from all-natural hemp. Studies have linked CBD to everything from reduced anxiety and decreased inflammation to improvements of skin conditions, like acne. With more and more CBD research happening every single day, this is just the beginning.

Ready for your science lesson? CBD works by keeping our endocannabinoid system, or ECS, in balance. This system is a collection of cell receptors and molecules that regulate everything from pain and inflammation to physiology and mood. Basically, we rely on it for just about everything and CBD helps to keep it all running smoothly. Over the last few months, I’ve been using CBD products as a way to stay calm, reduce anxiety, and manage everyday stress. I realized I wanted to create my own product to tackle all of these things and Chill is exactly that.

Each gummy contains 10mg of CBD and the product is completely THC free (which means you won’t get high). We used natural flavors (grape, lemon and orange in every bottle), ditched the artificial coloring, and even made them gluten free. They’ll not only help you make it through the holiday season, but I have a feeling they’ll quickly become a part of your daily routine.

The first CBD gummy from Bobbi Brown's EVOLUTION_18.

2021 is giving us over-the-counter medical cannabis

Low-dose CBD cannabis oil can be sold in pharmacies from next year.

From early 2021 you’ll technically be allowed to buy low-dose cannabis oil from pharmacies without a prescription.

However, while the laws have been changed so you can buy CBD oil over-the-counter, there are currently no products approved for sale.

Firstly, these products won’t get you high. This is only low-dose CBD oil we’re talking about and products won’t be allowed to have more than 1 per cent THC (which is the psychoactive part of the plant).

When the changes come in on February 1 next year, the maximum dose for adults will be limited to 150mg per day, which is why it’s considered low-dose. It’s expected patients would use this to help them sleep, reduce anxiety or depression and treat pain, although there’s currently not much evidence the oil is effective at this strength.

The decision from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) changes low-dose CBD oil from a schedule four drug, which doctors have to prescribe, to a schedule three drug, which chemists can hand out over-the-counter without a prescription.

Cassandra Hunt, the managing director of cannabis industry consultancy, Fresh Leaf Analytics, told Hack the change is significant.

“It’s the biggest milestone since legalisation in 2016 and it’s going to dramatically change access for patients in Australia.”

She says this will make life much easier for people who want to use this drug.

“Previously, they’ve had to go to a GP and they’ve had to talk to the GP about what they’re trying to treat, and then the GP has had to get special permission in order for them to be able to access a prescription.”

There will be a wait for products

While the changes will come into effect in early 2021, it could be years before there’s actually a product to buy.

Cassandra Hunt from Fresh Leaf Analytics told Hack that it’s unlikely anything will be on the shelves in February.

“In order for companies to get these products registered or available over-the-counter in pharmacies, they have to be registered as an S3 medicine,” she said.

“What that requires is quite significant data about the safety and efficacy and quality of the products.”

According to Cassandra, because the Australian cannabis industry is still so new, they don’t know how effective their low-dose CBD products are and it could take years to get that data.

She says it’s not clear what info the TGA wants, but if it’s expecting companies to run clinical trials then it could be a five-year wait for products.

“That data, given the industry is so young, isn’t easy to come by.”

Medical Association “surprised” by down-scheduling

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) doesn’t support the TGA’s decision to down-schedule low-dose CBD oil.

In a statement to Hack, the AMA said it isn’t confident pharmacists have the education to properly advise patients, and that side effects could go unchecked.

“Medical practitioners have only been prescribing CBD products for a few years, the evidence is still emerging, more education around its use is required,” the AMA said.

When it comes to possible side effects, the medical association fears doctors won’t be able to properly monitor patients when the CBD oil is sold through pharmacies.

“There is a risk that patient conditions that are associated with CBD use (e.g. anxiety, psychosis, chronic non-cancer pain, and epilepsy) will go unchecked and cause further harm to the patient,” the AMA told Hack.

The TGA told Hack the decision to make low-dose CBD oil available over the counter wasn’t based on how well it works, just that it isn’t harmful.

“The scheduling decision was made on the basis of the safety profile of CBD at this dose,” a TGA spokesperson said.

Cassandra from Fresh Leaf Analytics admits evidence of how well these products work is hard to come by but agrees they’re not harmful.

“There is good safety data to show that at the types of doses we’re talking about CBD is very safe.”

The illicit silver lining

According to Cassandra Hunt from Fresh Leaf Analytics, the TGA could also be trying to move CBD users away from the black market.

“I think one of the other motivations of the TGA is to make it easier for people to access these products where they might otherwise be using illicit channels,” she told Hack.

“The problem with some of the illicit channels is that the quality of the products is not always good.”

“Sometimes those products say they have something in them and that’s not in there, so you can’t really rely on the fact that you’re getting a good product.”

She also says that for the first time, as the cost of medical cannabis production comes down, legal products are reaching price parity with the illegal market.

“If you couple that with making it more easily accessible through pharmacies, that should hopefully make a big difference for people who’ve been getting relief through those channels, but maybe can’t rely on those products being good quality.”

From early 2021 you’ll technically be allowed to buy low-dose cannabis oil from pharmacies without a prescription.

CBD will go on sale in Australia, but first manufacturers will have to prove it works

While CBD has been approved for over-the-counter sale, there are regulatory hurdles to clear before it actually appears in pharmacies

“Y ou can have as much whiskey as you like, but there’s no whiskey available,” says Prof Iain McGregor, psychopharmacologist and academic director of the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics, when asked to describe the rules around CBD in Australia at the moment.

CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant, but unlike THC, it does not have psychoactive effects. On 1 February, it became legal to purchase products containing low-dose cannabidiol (CBD) over the counter, after the Therapeutic Goods Administration down-scheduled the substance from a Schedule 4 (prescription medicine) to a Schedule 3 (pharmacist-only medicine). On 15 December, the TGA announced the decision after a safety review that indicated “known adverse events of CBD at low doses were not serious”.

But those afflicted with pain, anxiety or simple curiosity looking to buy CBD would have received a disappointing response from their pharmacists this week. While the substance itself is hypothetically legal, no product containing it has been approved by the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) – a requirement of sale.

CBD’s medicinal status in Australia is much different from the situation in other countries where the substance is available without a prescription, such as the UK and US. In the UK, low-dose CBD oil can be sold as a dietary supplement, but not a medicine. In the US, the substance is not approved on a federal level, but in some states it is possible to buy everything from pet food to bottled water to Martha Stewart branded gummies containing CBD. “You have this runaway train that’s way beyond the evidence available,” says McGregor.

“Now we have approval, but in order for companies to get these products to market they have to … show that the product is safe, but also efficacious.

“And therein lies the problem – there are no good clinical trials that show CBD at 150mg [the daily dose approved by the TGA] is actually effective.”

“We don’t know if it will work,” says Assoc Prof Yvonne Bonomo, a physician in addiction medicine and chief investigator at the Australian Centre for Cannabinoid Clinical Research Excellence. “It may work for some people. It’s hard to know. That’s why we need to look at it.”

“If it’s going to be treated as a medicine, it needs to go through the processes medicines go through,” she says. “Other countries have used different pathways to make it available and they have different methods that aren’t as rigorous.”

Bonomo emphasises the importance of quality control, saying that the upfront work is worth it in the long run. “For products to be listed on the ARTG, there is a process. It’s a complex process, but it’s a necessary process to make sure that those quality products do get listed.”

The Australian Medical Association did not support the TGA’s decision to down-schedule the substance, citing the lack of ARTG-listed products – alongside the potential for interactions with prescription medicines, and a need for more evidence.

“We’re filling the gap of 70 years of prohibition where there was no research,” says Tommy Huppert, the CEO of Cannatrek, an Australian cannabis grower and manufacturer. Huppert’s company has just inked an exclusive supply deal with Chemist Warehouse, though what exactly it will supply remains to be seen. “Everyone’s really racing to get the product to market. What sort of mountain will we have to climb? Is it going to be weeks? Months?” he wonders.

Though ARTG registration is a high hurdle, there are huge potential earnings on the table. The director of Southern Cannabis Holdings, Tim Drury, believes the over-the-counter market for CBD oil will “exceed $200m per annum”.

That CBD is found in a plant subject to three seperate United Nations treaties is not the only thing that sets it apart from other medicines. It also differs because “we’re really talking about generic actives,” says Huppert. Rather than developing a new drug for a specific purpose, CBD manufacturers will have to run clinical trials to find out which purposes an existing and widely used substance is actually effective for. Or, as McGregor puts it, “the exact opposite of most drug development”.

There are plenty of wild health claims about CBD oil’s properties (which have resulted in TGA fines in the past). There is also lots of anecdotal evidence that CBD helps with everything from insomnia, to chronic pain, to anxiety, to epilepsy. Clinical trial data backs up some of these assertions – but only at much higher dosages than the TGA has approved.

“Now the challenge is the process of proving [the anecdotal evidence] … to list the medicine with an objective claim,” says Huppert. “It usually takes years and millions of dollars to bring a drug to market.”

And when it does arrive, it could well be a price point that will shut a lot of people out. In the UK, a bottle containing a 300mg dose of CBD oil – enough for two days’ use at the TGA-approved level – costs about A$40.

“You’re not talking about the prices of vitamins, or turmeric … you’re talking about a commodity that is quite sought after,” says McGregor. “That is the story that we hear over and over again [from patients], that they can’t afford the product.”

LEARN | LAWS & REGULATIONS

Wyoming

Is weed legal in Wyoming?

No. Wyoming has not legalized recreational or medical marijuana, therefore it is against the law to use or possess cannabis in the state.

However, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) products that contain less than 0.3% THC by weight are legal to use and possess.

Legislation history

On March 6, 2019, the state enacted HB0171 , which was signed into law by Gov. Mark Gordon. It gave the Department of Agriculture authority over hemp production and regulation.

After the signing of HB0171, the Department of Agriculture submitted its plan for regulating hemp in the state to the US Department of Agriculture. The act formally removed hemp-derived CBD from Wyoming’s list of controlled substances.

There were at least two attempts by advocates to place marijuana legalization on the state ballot, including an effort to get it in front of voters in 2018 . But advocates failed to gather enough signatures to qualify.

Penalties

In Wyoming, the penalties for those caught with marijuana are among the harshest in the United States. Being found under the influence of marijuana is considered a misdemeanor punishable by six months imprisonment and a $750 fine. Growing, drying, or processing cannabis can result in a misdemeanor, six months imprisonment, and a $1,000 fine. Possession of less than 3 ounces (85 grams) can result in a misdemeanor, 12 months imprisonment, and a $1,000 fine. Additionally, possession within 500 feet of a school is punishable by an additional fine of $500.

The full list of penalties can be found on the Wyoming State Legislature website.

Cannabis & CBD in Wyoming – Are They Legal?

Welcome to the latest round of legislative meanderings concerning marijuana and CBD! Those familiar with the complexities of these laws are doubtless saying “not again” as they light a joint to relax their frayed nerves. Of course, only residents of 11 states plus Washington, D.C., can do this without an MMJ card. Even in some of those locations, recreational cannabis isn’t yet for sale!

Then there are the other 22 states that have medical marijuana programs. Again, a handful has yet to implement the program in any meaningful way. As for CBD, the rules surrounding it are the stuff of migraine headaches. Like cannabis itself, the compound, CBD, isn’t federally legal. However, hemp that contains CBD, is!

The 2018 Farm Bill led us to the current merry-go-round of confusion, consternation, and condemnation. You see, each state is allowed to make rules regarding cannabidiol. Few of them have provided any clarity whatsoever. We have a truly bizarre situation where marijuana is recreationally legal, but CBD is technically illegal in at least one state (we’re looking at you, California).

With CBD at the whims of state and even local lawmakers, things are getting messy. At Wayofleaf, we continue to delve into the cannabidiol labyrinth, in the hope we don’t run into the minotaur! Today, we take a look at Wyoming and see if cannabis and CBD are legal in that state. At least on this occasion, the rules are somewhat clear!

Does Wyoming Permit Marijuana?

In a nutshell, heck no! Wyoming has among the strictest anti-marijuana stances in the United States. There is disagreement over when the state first banned the plant. In the Pursuit of Oblivion: A Social History of Drugs, Richard Davenport-Hines suggests prohibition occurred in 1929. However, in The SAGE Encyclopedia of Pharmacology and Society, Sarah E Boslaugh writes that the ban happened in 1913.

Either way, Wyoming has remained firmly against cannabis ever since. In 2015, the Wyoming chapter of NORML gained signatures to get MMJ on the 2016 ballot. However, the state’s ballot initiative requirements are among the toughest in the nation. In the state’s House of Representatives, legislation to decriminalize marijuana has failed several times.

This is despite a 2014 poll showing that 72% of the population supported the use of marijuana if approved by a doctor. A survey from 2016 showed that MMJ support had increased to 81%. An even more recent poll put the percentage in favor at 86%! Alas, there was no movement in the state legislature when it adjourned its session in the first half of 2020.

At present, without decriminalization, there are strict penalties in play. Being caught ‘under the influence’ of cannabis is a misdemeanor in Wyoming! It comes with a potential jail term of six months. Possession of less than three ounces is also a misdemeanor but has a possible prison sentence of up to a year. Possession of over three ounces is a felony, and you could spend up to five years in jail. Sale of any amount is a more serious felony, and comes with a maximum sentence of ten years!

According to a 2018 ACLU report, African-Americans in Wyoming are 5.2 times more likely to get arrested for marijuana possession. This is despite a similar rate of usage.

What Is the Situation with CBD in Wyoming?

It is better news on the CBD front, though even that is only a recent development. For a very long time, the state of Wyoming resisted any attempts to legalize CBD for any reason. That changed in 2015 when a law took effect and allowed the use of CBD oil to treat seizures. At that point, you were not legally permitted to use it for any other reason. It was an incredibly narrow law with no in-state access.

At the time, you could only apply through the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH). You could use medical CBD after a doctor prescribed it to treat seizures caused by epilepsy. You needed to apply for a Hemp Extract Registration Card. It cost $150 and required annual renewal, just like MMJ cards in other states.

Even those with intractable epilepsy could only use CBD oil with a maximum THC content of 0.3%. It was also necessary to register with the Hemp Extract Registry!

Common Sense Prevails in Wyoming

The above was an awful lot of trouble to go to just to use CBD oil! After years of procrastination, the state legislature finally acted. On March 6, 2019, the state enacted HB0171. Republican Governor, Mark Gordon, signed it into law. It resulted in the end of the Hemp Extract Registry and changed the CBD industry in Wyoming for the better.

HB0171 made the Wyoming Department of Agriculture the rulemaking authority for the production and regulation of hemp. The bill came around three months after the American President signed the Farm Bill into law. After years of fighting against cannabidiol, the bill passed through with ease. The House voted 56-3 in favor, and the Senate also voted heavily in favor, 26-3.

What the act did was to remove hemp from the Wyoming Controlled Substances Act. Crucially, it also removed CBD. This is something that the Farm Bill did not do, and would frankly have alleviated a lot of confusion if it had.

Therefore, Wyoming residents can freely purchase CBD oil in their state, as long as it comes from hemp, and has less than 0.3% THC. However, please remember that the FDA maintains regulatory authority once hemp-derived CBD products are sold across state lines. If you use any marijuana product or anything with more than 0.3% THC, you are at risk of one of Wyoming’s strict penalties.

Does Wyoming Have an Industrial Hemp Program?

Yes. It is a significant part of HB0171. The Farm Bill permits industrial hemp cultivation throughout the United States. However, each state must submit a plan for approval. Wyoming did so in January 2020 and received good news within a few weeks. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the Wyoming hemp regulatory plan. It granted authority to the WDA to regulate the Wyoming hemp industry.

The next step for the WDA was to implement emergency rules, which will remain in place for 120 days. During this period, the WDA aims to go through the standard rule promulgation process. This includes a public comment period and a final rule. At the time, the WDA Director, Doug Miyamoto, said hemp was a new crop with the attached inherent risks.

In the meantime, Wyoming farmers have come together to learn more about hemp. The state certainly has advantageous climate conditions for the crop. Justin Loeffler is part of the GreenTree Ag LLC and believes the short growing season is a huge help. His company planted 11 varieties of hemp in Colorado on 60 acres of land. They selected an area of the state with similar climate conditions to Wyoming. It hopes to learn enough to help farmers combat the challenges they are sure to face.

A considerable majority of the hemp grown in the United States is for the CBD industry. It is potentially an enormous cash crop, and it is no surprise to learn that thousands of farmers want to try. However, there are also plenty of risks attached. Issues like cross-pollination, flooding, and pests can all damage a crop. Also, farmers that produce hemp with more than 0.3% THC will see their plants destroyed.

Final Thoughts on CBD and Cannabis Laws in Wyoming

The prohibition on marijuana in Wyoming has lasted for more than a century. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon. At present, it is one of 17 states with no MMJ program. With various attempts to bring an MMJ bill to the legislature failing, we fear it will be several years before Wyoming makes a serious effort at permitting cannabis. This is despite the overwhelming majority of state residents saying they support MMJ!

At least Wyoming now allows the sale, possession, and use of CBD. However, this process also took several years, and only came into effect in 2019. Residents can now use hemp-derived CBD with a maximum of 0.3% THC, without a doctor’s prescription. The Wyoming hemp industry will start in earnest this year. It is interesting to see how many farmers try to make the most out of this promising cash crop. Even if it doesn’t make the CBD market, there are a ton of other uses for hemp!

Cannabis and CBD laws are difficult to understand, and Wyoming is no exception. We aim to clear up some of the confusion in this quick guide.

History of CBD in New Orleans

CBD first received national recognition in 2013, when CNN featured a documentary about Charlotte Figi, a little girl with a severe case of Dravet syndrome. When Charlotte was five years old, she was experiencing nearly 300 seizures a week and no treatments seemed to help control her seizures. Absolutely devastated, her family desperately searched for an alternative to conventional treatments. The entire world took notice of this incident, and research began for the potential medical CBD benefits. Many studies have generated positive results, which has made the demand for the supplement skyrocket.

Although CBD was discovered in the 1940s, research in New Orleans, Louisiana has been slow due to the legal status of cannabis over the last century. This past decade however, CBD has eliminated its negative stigma of being associated with marijuana, and many medical professionals have recommended it to help cope with various health conditions.

New Orleans CBD Oil Guide

Why is CBD so popular in New Orleans, Louisiana?

It’s hard to say the precise moment when CBD in New Orleans went from being a fidget spinner alternative for stoners to a mainstream panacea. So the question now becomes: Is this the dawning of a new miracle elixir, or does all the hype mean we have already reached Peak CBD?

Is CBD Legal in New Orleans, LA?

The cannabis plant comes in many different varieties. For decades though, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) treated them all the same, classifying cannabis as a Schedule I substance. Schedule I drugs are considered to have “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse” and are thus illegal to produce or possess.

However, the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (aka the Farm Bill) changed all that. The Farm Bill legalized “hemp,” which the legislation defined as cannabis that contains no more than 0.3% THC, in New Orleans, Louisiana and surrounding areas like Opelousas and New Iberia.

CBD is available in a variety of forms. Some of the most common CBD delivery methods are listed below, but how it’s ultimately used depends on personal needs and preferences. The delivery method of CBD affects how quickly it works and what kinds of effects it has on the body.

  • Edibles are broad range of products to eat or drink, like gummies or chocolates. Edibles can take anywhere from 20 minutes to four hours to take effect.
  • Oils and tincturesare processed and concentrated forms of CBD that are often placed under the tongue using a dropper and absorbed into the bloodstream.
  • Pills and capsules are ingested orally and look similar to the vitamins and/or drugs you’d find in a drugstore. They typically contain CBD oil or CBD isolate.
  • Topicals are CBD-infused oils, creams and lotions that are intended to be used directly on skin, hair or nails. They’re a popular way to treat localized pain, but are also used as skincare, haircare and massage oil as well.
  • Vaping, like e-cigarettes, involves inhaling a vaporized liquid that contains CBD oil. Nicotine is not usually present if CBD is, though it is possible to mix them.

As you can see, there are plenty of CBD available in New Orleans, LA, as well as CBD stores that sell products online.

Non-psychoactive and increasingly popular as a relaxation drug, CBD can also be a DIY extract

Cannabidiol (CBD), an extract that many use as an anti-anxiety or relaxation tool, comes from the Cannabis sativa plant and cannot be divorced from this original source. Cannabis sativa has many different variations, and not all of these contain significant amounts of CBD. Prior to the gradual ending of cannabis prohibition in many locales, CBD was practically eliminated from the commercial black market to maximize profitability of the psychoactive cannabinoid content of the plants through selective breeding, according to many of the black-market growers I have spoken with throughout the years. The reason CBD is now widely accessible is most assuredly due to the change in social perceptions of this once-outlawed plant and the legalization of this plant in many locales. Without cannabis legalization, CBD would be difficult to acquire—and there would be no testing to ensure that consumers receive the product they are paying for.

In the process of developing recipes, I spent much of my time talking to CBD farmers and exploring their lush farms. I am forever grateful to my friends at Feather Canyon Farms in Del Norte County, California, for introducing me to some of the most impressive plants I’ve ever seen in my life. Beforehand, my experience with these plants had been limited to small indoor grows and the product offerings of our legal cannabis dispensaries.

One of the things I learned from the CBD farmers is that CBD can be an unstable and fleeting trait in cannabis plants. CBD production doesn’t just depend on the genetics of a plant, but the methods of growing, and what is also recognized in grape and wine production as the terroir. New strains of CBD-rich cannabis are being developed for the legal market all the time. I haven’t been able to try them all, but I’ve had the privilege of trying some of the most well-known strains, such as Harlequin, Harle-Tsu, ACDC, Cannatonic, Charlotte’s Web, Sour Tsunami, and a rare crop of Golden Goat, which expressed more than 8% CBD. This list is by no means complete in terms of CBD-rich cannabis strains available.

Hemp, the low-to-no THC variety of Cannabis sativa grown for the oilseed and fiber it produces, can also produce CBD in varying amounts. Both wild hemp and cultivated hemp can produce CBD in their resins. No matter what variety of Cannabis sativa produces CBD, the molecule is always the same.

Farmers, Plants, and Test Results over Brands: How To Select CBD Products

I believe that quality, whole-plant infusions and extractions matter. Epidiolex, the FDA-approved drug, is a whole-plant extract of CBD, purified, standardized, and manufactured for consistency. It’s rare as far as pharmaceuticals go; GW Pharma grows and processes their own cannabis to make therapeutic pharmaceuticals. Whether you are in need of a pharmaceutical treatment or are using CBD as a home remedy or for pleasure, you should be using whole-plant infusions and extractions. The cannabis farmers I spoke with have expressed a similar belief.

I am often asked about which brands of CBD are the best and which products to choose. But the truth is that when it comes to CBD, brands do not matter. Farms and plants matter. Selecting quality CBD-rich cannabis plant products begins with the farm they are grown on. Before you purchase any CBD product, know the farm and farmer. This is an easy task in most of our state-legal cannabis dispensaries, as this information will be readily available and even used as a marketing tool. This information is harder to find if you are purchasing CBD products from the over-the-counter herbal supplement market.

CBD products sold over the counter in the mainstream herbal supplement market do not have the oversight and regulated testing that most of our state-legal dispensary systems have. If you choose to purchase CBD products in the herbal supplement market, you must rely on the information they provide to you in terms of acquisition of plant material and test results. You must also be aware that there is controversy (both legal and scientific) surrounding the purchase of CBD products over the counter through the mainstream herbal supplement marketplace.

Test results matter. The herbal supplement marketplace is largely unregulated and a bit like the Wild West. An exposé in the New York Times in 2013 detailed some very disturbing problems with the herbal supplement marketplace and the fact that consumers often do not receive the products they are paying for. As well, CBD supplement merchants in the over-the-counter herbal supplement market have been cited by the FDA for many violations around the labeling and distribution of their products.

Certainly, I am not saying that all herbal supplement products are bad. What I am saying is that it is a wise decision as a consumer to seek out information and verify it if you are purchasing supplement products of any kind. And you should also be aware that not all locales will regard the purchase of CBD products as a legal activity.

The functionality of this book is to show you how to seek, find, and enjoy CBD-rich cannabis. Facts and aesthetics both matter if what you seek is a quality product and a satisfying experience.

In the recipes that follow, the focus is on whole-plant CBD-rich cannabis extractions and infusions, as these high-quality, artisanal, and farmer-centric whole plants and whole-plant resins will unfold themselves with fragrant and delicious complexity in your kitchen. My wish is for you to enjoy and benefit from everything CBD-rich cannabis offers without missing anything.

CBD to THC Ratio Selection and Dosing

Selection and dosage amount of CBD or CBD: THC is a very individual process and an ideal dosage that works as a one-size-fits-all amount does not exist. If you have concerns about what is best for you, this is something you should discuss with your personal physician. There are also MDs and DOs who specialize in cannabis therapeutics who can guide you based on your current health situation. If you are considering CBD for therapeutic medicinal purposes, it’s a good idea to consult with a physician who has knowledge and experience in this area before you begin.

I’ve developed a checklist that you can use and that I hope will guide you to the products that are worthy of your consideration:

— Is the name of the farm or farmer disclosed on the product label or available from the company or merchant selling the product?

— Does the product have test results from a third-party lab independent of any brand or manufacturer? Can you verify these results independent of a company, merchant, or legal dispensary?

— Do the test results include more than just CBD and other cannabinoid content?

— Are there test results for pesticides, mold, and other contamination? (Cannabis is a powerful soil remediator and easily absorbs toxic chemicals from the soil it is grown in.)

— If the product you would like to purchase is raw plant material, have you scoped it to check for mold or insects? Most dispensaries have magnification scopes for their customers to use—take advantage of this.

— Does the product look fresh, and does it smell fresh and clean? Is the product or plant material dated with harvest time or an expiration date?

CBD Farmer’s Oil Recipe with Whole Flowers

When one considers flavors, textures, freshness, effects, and fragrances as the starting point of evaluating a quality CBD oil product, this recipe will produce a gourmet oil extraction that will impress even the most experienced connoisseur.

Farmers know best. And this oil recipe was given to me by one of the most hardworking and knowledgeable CBD farmers I have met, Mr. Jesse Davis of Feather Canyon Farms in Del Norte County, California.

I experienced many pleasant surprises while sampling this oil at home, and the process of making it was even more surprising. Rich in both CBD and the natural terpenes of the Harle-Tsu CBD-rich cannabis plant, this oil is a gorgeous emerald color with a sublime minty and herbaceous flavor that I have never experienced with a CBD oil previously. This oil was completely non-intoxicating, but it was very pleasant and relaxing.

This oil, processed in MCT oil (fractionated coconut oil) at a low temperature for 24 hours, produced a CBD oil product that has lab tested at 10mg CBD and less than 1 mg

THC per 1ml dose. How low was that temperature? 175°F (80°C)—a temperature much lower than what is typically expected for a complete decarboxylation. What made the difference? The slow processing of this oil over a 24-hour period. Decarboxylation takes place with temperature, time, or in this case, both time and temperature.

I am satisfied that the flavor profile of this oil was only possible due to the careful, low-temperature processing technique that retained the majority of naturally occurring terpenes in the whole cannabis flowers from the CBD-rich Harle-Tsu cannabis strain grown in the mountain region of Del Norte County. Flower quality really does matter when it comes to producing an exquisite CBD oil such as this one.

This makes approximately 10 oz. (296ml) of CBD oil, but you can increase or decrease the amount of oil or flowers depending on the CBD concentration you desire.

10 oz. (296ml) MCT oil or more (otherwise known as liquid fractionated coconut oil)

1 oz. (28g) or more whole CBD-rich, low-or-no- THC cannabis flowers, cured, dried, and chopped

  1. This recipe requires a slow cooker with a low heat setting to process this oil correctly. Add the chopped cannabis to the slow cooker.
  2. Pour the oil over the cannabis, making sure that all the flower material is covered. If you need to add a little extra oil to cover the flowers, you should do so at this time. Cover the slow cooker and set to the low or low cook setting (depending on your model).
  3. Within at least 3 hours, your slow cooker should reach the final processing temperature of about 175°F (80°C). Use a candy thermometer to verify the temperature and adjust if necessary. Stir the oil and plant material at this time and cover the slow cooker once again.
  4. Every few hours, stir the oil and flower material to evenly distribute the infusion throughout the process. Do not stir frequently, as this will allow more of the volatile terpenes to escape into the air. To preserve as many of the volatile constituents as possible, such as terpenes, leave the lid on the pot throughout the entire process. This can be left to process overnight without stirring.
  5. After the 24-hour period is over, cool the oil by unplugging the slow cooker and allowing the materials to remain in the pot and the oil to cool to room temperature a few more hours.
  6. Strain the oil from the plant material through cheesecloth and into a clean glass jar. The oil is now ready to use by itself in measured doses or in any recipe.

Store in a cool, dark, and dry area. Use within 6 months for freshest flavor

How is CBD extracted from cannabis?

All the cannabidiol (CBD) you find in your favorite gummies, drinks, and oils has to go through an extraction process first. CBD, for those who don’t know, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis. Extracting CBD involves isolating the chemical compound from the surrounding plant material and distilling it in high concentrations. Research has shown that cannabinoids may have beneficial effects on physical and mental health, and extraction makes it possible to consume more of those cannabinoids with less effort.

In this article, you’ll learn about how CBD is extracted from hemp and cannabis, as well as which extraction process yields the best results.

How to extract CBD from cannabis

Extracting cannabinoids from cannabis or hemp can be as simple as making cannabutter at home. But for large-scale manufacturing purposes and more potent results, there are two primary methods for efficient CBD extraction. Each method presents distinct benefits in creating a high-quality, highly-potent CBD product.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction method: Carbon dioxide is a versatile gas with a variety of commercial uses, including extracting compounds from plant matter. The CO2 method uses the gas in its normal state as well as in supercritical liquid form. Through the use of a pressurized chamber, called a closed-loop extractor, CO2 gas is compressed until it becomes a liquid. The liquid is forced over the cannabis material where it strips away cannabinoids like CBD. The entire solution is brought back to temperatures and pressures at which the CO2 reverts to gas and evaporates, leaving behind the CBD extracted out of the cannabis plant material.

Andrew Leising, VP of Strategic Sourcing for Balanced Health Botanicals, elaborated on the process: “CO2 is a scalable and highly versatile form of extraction. There are CO2 extraction units built to process anywhere from 1 to 1,200 pounds of biomass in a single run. With CO2 extraction, you can not only extract cannabinoids on a large scale efficiently, you can extract specific compounds like terpenes.”

Terpenes are the naturally-occurring compounds that infuse cannabis with its signature aromas and flavors as well as potential therapeutic benefits. Full-spectrum CBD products rely on extraction methods that can keep these compounds intact.

Solvent extraction method: The solvent extraction process is similar to using CO2, but it’s notably cheaper and faster. Butane has long been used in cannabis extraction but ethanol and propane are also popular. This method also uses a closed-loop system wherein the liquid butane, propane, or ethanol washes over the cannabis, releasing the CBD, other cannabinoids, and terpenes. The solvent then has to be carefully heated or cooled to separate the solvent from the extracted compounds without damaging them. The main drawback of solvent extraction is that some solvents may extract impurities from the cannabis plant material, which could give the end-product an unpleasant taste.

Both of these extraction methods use highly combustible chemicals and can be dangerous. Only trained professionals in properly equipped labs should attempt any kind of chemical extraction.

How long does CBD extraction take?

The process of CBD extraction is fairly expedient and can take place in a single afternoon. According to Leising, it takes about three to four hours to process up to 1,200 pounds of cannabis.

What happens after CBD oil extraction?

After CBD oil is extracted from hemp or cannabis, the process of winterization begins. This process removes the impurities and unwanted elements that made it through the extraction process, such as fats, lipids, and waxes. In essence, winterization transforms crude oil into purified oil. The process gets its name from a step which involves mixing the extracted oil with ethanol and freezing the solution. The impurities and undesirable compounds solidify and fall out of the solution, which is then passed through a filter, separating wax, lipids, and fats from the oil. The final step involves removing the ethanol from the solution.

CBD may go through further refinement after winterization to create the purest possible CBD product. The additional refinement phase is known as short-path distillation. The process is similar to winterization, but it involves using reduced pressure to allow lower-than-normal boiling temperatures. The solution is heated just enough for the impurities to boil off and travel a short path out of the system, leaving pure CBD oil to distill into the collection chamber.

Which CBD extraction method is best?

Many cannabis experts agree that the CO2 method is best for producing premium oil that stays potent longer because the hemp or cannabis compounds remain stable during this type of extraction. Full-spectrum CBD oil, prized for its potency and purity, is made via CO2 extraction. Other methods may destabilize the compounds, potentially creating lower-quality CBD oil with a shorter shelf life.

Leising agrees that the CO2 method is superior. As he shared, “CO2 is generally preferred for the extraction of cannabinoids that are meant for ingestion or further refinement. Due to the nature of the extraction process, you can be assured that your extracted oil will be free of any residual solvents, microbes, and fungi.”

The same is not true for the solvent method, which often fails to eliminate such impurities.

Can I extract CBD oil at home?

It depends on what extraction method you’re considering. Let’s say you have a thriving indoor cannabis garden and want to consume the cannabis you’ve harvested without having to smoke it all. You can safely make CBD oil at home via a simple infusion and consume a high concentration of cannabinoids without risking life or limb.

What you don’t want to do is attempt to make a CBD extract using inedible solvents or CO2. Leising explained, “You cannot perform CO2 extractions at home. The equipment is cost prohibitive, and if you don’t know how to operate the equipment, it could be extremely dangerous. The equipment runs at extremely high pressures between 2500-4000 PSI and could be very dangerous if the operator is not properly trained.”

Bottom line: don’t risk your life for CBD oil. Visit a reputable dispensary and shop for high-quality, lab-tested products instead.

Review of Thrive CBD Oil

I received a bottle of Thrive’s CBD oil to try, for the purposes of this review. However all opinions are my own.

There’s a new brand of CBD coming to your virtual shopping baskets. It’s called Thrive – and I was excited to try it and learn more about the brand to find out what’s different about it.

So what’s different?

The first thing I noticed was that it comes in a small matte purple bottle. Even the cardboard box I eased it out of had a silky, upmarket feel – as if it could contain an expensive skin cream or even perfume. A few violet-coloured, branded information cards were tucked into the box it was all delivered in. Thrive has definitely spent a lot of time on their marketing, getting the colours just right – a calming soft violet. Just opening the box feels special, like you’re opening a present.

And then you get why.

Unlike the marketing of many other CBD oil brands, which seem to focus on sports performance or nutrition, Thrive pushes the whole idea of YOU. Taking time out. Calming and slowing down, and focusing on what you need, mentally. Along with an information card there was a card in the box with a list of things to do just for yourself, and also a checklist that you can put on your fridge and tick off the good habits you’ve committed to every day. You know, like taking your CBD oil and having a hot shower. A quiet cup of tea. Those kinds of things.

The product itself contains the same ingredients – CBD (hemp extract), MCT oil and flavour extracts – as other brands I’ve seen. So as well as the personal wellness/’me time’ idea being something new, Thrive have a brand new flavour that I’ve never seen before in CBD-world: Blood Orange. And oh my gosh it’s good. Drop the liquid under your tongue and you immediately get a burst of orange but less refreshing or zesty than you’d expect and a lot more chocolate orange. I’ve been used to standard flavours like lemon and peppermint up until now and this was a refreshing change for me. Thrive also make a peppermint flavour, if you’re interested in that.

As for the CBD, again, it’s THC free so won’t get you high (thanks to a patented cold ethanol extraction process), comes in 500mg strength and their cannabis is organically grown without any harsh pesticides and the oil is lab tested. Pretty standard. The matte coating on the bottle is not only for prettiness – although we’re warned on the box not to leave our oil out in sunlight, I imagine this goes some way in protecting the oil inside from inadvertent sunlight exposure.

It’s downright delicious, they have lots of tips on looking after yourself spiritually and mentally and it comes in a pretty bottle. The CBD oil inside is great quality, THC, organic and lab tested to all the right laws. I guess it’s quite similar to a lot of other brands on the market, but does appeal to those of us who will want to slow down and snuggle up with a good book once in a while. Top marks for such appealing and clever marketing – lots of wellness tips over on their Instagram too – and for developing a brand new flavour that I’m sure will appeal to many people.
