CBD is one of over 100 cannabinoids produced by the marijuana plant, but unlike the majority of them – which are not known to possess major health benefits on their own – it is known to display nearly all of the medicinal and therapeutic properties of whole-plant cannabis.

With laws being altered throughout America to allow for medical marijuana use, however, the traditional stigma is rapidly dissipating, and we have to put much of that change down to CBD and its incredible array of benefits.

History of CBD in Pensacola

CBD first received national recognition in 2013, when CNN featured a documentary about Charlotte Figi, a little girl with a severe case of Dravet syndrome. When Charlotte was five years old, she was experiencing nearly 300 seizures a week and no treatments seemed to help control her seizures. Absolutely devastated, her family desperately searched for an alternative to conventional treatments. The entire world took notice of this incident, and research began for the potential medical CBD benefits. Many studies have generated positive results, which has made the demand for the supplement skyrocket.

Although CBD was discovered in the 1940s, research in Pensacola, Florida has been slow due to the legal status of cannabis over the last century. This past decade however, CBD has eliminated its negative stigma of being associated with marijuana, and many medical professionals have recommended it to help cope with various health conditions.

When you’re looking to buy hemp oil in Pensacola, it can be incredibly tough trying to distinguish one brand or company from the next. If you know your stuff, you’ll know that the best brands in Pensacola source their raw material from legal industrial hemp, extract the active CBD with low-temperature CO2 equipment, offer third-party laboratory testing, and produce organic, solvent-free oils, capsules, and tinctures.

Why is CBD so popular in Pensacola, Florida?

The cannabis plant comes in many different varieties. For decades though, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) treated them all the same, classifying cannabis as a Schedule I substance. Schedule I drugs are considered to have “no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse” and are thus illegal to produce or possess.

However, the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (aka the Farm Bill) changed all that. The Farm Bill legalized “hemp,” which the legislation defined as cannabis that contains no more than 0.3% THC, in Pensacola, Florida and surrounding areas like Pinecrest and Pembroke Pines.

What is the difference between liquid-filled capsules and softgels?

There are a few. For one, our liquid-filled capsules are made with cleaner ingredients, whereas softgels can contain gelatin, glycerin, carrageenan, and other sorbitol additions. They also have thinner capsule walls than most softgels, which are designed to help them disintegrate faster. They are more stable in high-temperature and low-humidity environments as well.

Is Charlotte’s Web CBD Worth the Hype? Here’s a CBD Enthusiast’s Review

Shopping for CBD products online is no easy feat. There are thousands of companies clouding the market, which makes it difficult to tell which brands are legitimate (and which aren’t).

I learned this the hard way when I started taking CBD a couple years ago. I didn’t do my research, and the first product I bought didn’t seem to work—however, I didn’t give up on CBD. Over the past year, I’ve tried plenty of CBD oils, topicals, capsules, edibles, and other hemp-infused goods, all from an array of different CBD companies. As a CBD enthusiast and product reviewer, I receive a lot of questions about products, and Charlotte’s Web is one up-and-coming brand in the CBD space that I get asked about often.

I’m here to give you my honest review on Charlotte’s Web, including the pros and cons of the company (through my eyes), as well as some insights into three Charlotte’s Web products that I’ve tried myself.

Founded by the 7 Stanley Brothers in 2012, Charlotte’s Web produces a number of commercially available CBD products, from gummies to tinctures to pet treats. Back in 2012, the brothers received international media attention due to the development of a new strain of hemp. Their strain was low in THC (the psychoactive component in cannabis) but high in CBD. All of Charlotte’s Webs products are made with that original strain of hemp, which the company calls “the world’s most trusted hemp extract.”

The pros

Let’s start by accentuating the positives. What are some of the main reasons to consider Charlotte’s Web as your CBD company of choice?

Made in the USA

The company is proudly based out of Colorado, and its hemp products are sourced right here in the United States.

Many hemp enthusiasts, like myself, will appreciate the fact that Charlotte’s Web really does have a missional focus. The company is highly supportive of research into how CBD and hemp products can improve health and wellness. It also happens to offer some of the most rigorous batch testing of any cannabis company in the world today.

Fairly priced products

Comparatively speaking, Charlotte’s Web offers its products at affordable price points, with some starting as low as $15. I also noticed that the company provides veteran discounts and has a rewards program in which regular shoppers can enroll and save on products.

The cons

It’s easy to talk about the positives, but what about the potential downsides of Charlotte’s Web?

Expensive shipping

One thing to be aware of is that if you’re ordering products straight from the Charlotte’s Web online store, shipping costs can really stack up.

Regulatory issues

Regulatory and compliance issues are pretty common in the CBD industry, and Charlotte’s Web has received some scrutiny from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as well as a bit of backlash for unclear labelling on some of its products. The brand has since updated the packaging and labeling on its products to more clearly state the CBD content in each. Charlotte’s Web still has very positive customer reviews overall, as well as a strong reputation in the CBD hemp industry.

The 3 best CBD products from Charlotte’s Web

This is the oil that started it all. Made in small batches through alcohol extraction, Charlotte’s Web’s Original CBD oil includes 50 milligrams of CBD per milliliter. I enjoyed the taste of this mint chocolate oil, though it also comes in an olive oil (natural) flavor. Other Charlotte’s Web CBD oils with lower potencies come in a wider range of flavors, such as orange blossom and lemon twist, so customers can choose which CBD oil strength and flavor appeals to them most.

If daily stress has become a struggle for you, then Charlotte’s Web’s CBD calm gummies may be worth a try. Personally, I was pleased by the mental clarity and tranquility that these tasty edibles offered, as well as the delicious lemon lime flavor that’s derived from natural fruit and vegetable extracts. Each gummy contains 10 milligrams of CBD, plus additional natural ingredients, like lemon balm, that may help promote relaxation. In addition to this formulation, Charlotte’s Web offers CBD gummies to help with recovery and sleep.

Looking for a soothing topical to provide some relief after an intense workout? Consider this option from Charlotte’s Web. I love it for many reasons, but especially its natural, gluten-free, and vegan formula that’s made without any synthetic additives. Instead, it contains just 3 simple ingredients—full-spectrum hemp (about 300 milligrams of CBD per ounce), menthol, and arnica—for a rub-on gel that’s refreshing at every level. And if you prefer creams or balms over gels, Charlotte’s Web also offers those.

What other kinds of products does Charlotte’s Web offer?

I’ve highlighted three of my favorite products in the list above, but it’s worth noting that there are many more to explore in Charlotte’s Web’s online shop. Some of the options include CBD and hemp oil capsules, CBD isolates, a range of products for pets, and numerous topical creams.

Where can I find lab test results for Charlotte’s Web products?

Charlotte’s Web has an admirable commitment to rigorous research and small-batch testing. Independent testing is important for anyone buying CBD products since it allows you to know exactly what you’re getting. These certificates of analysis (COAs) contain important information about the quality and type of CBD extract used within a product.

When you buy from Charlotte’s Web, all of this information is easily obtainable online. All you have to do is find the lot number on your CBD product and enter it on the batch reports page to learn more about the cannabinoid profile, potency, and test results for heavy metals and unwanted chemicals within that specific hemp extract.

Will Charlotte’s Web CBD oil make me high?

When purchasing any CBD tincture, isolate, or oil, it’s natural to wonder whether it will lead to any intoxicating effects. While Charlotte’s Web provides full-spectrum hemp products, you will not get high from taking them.

Main takeaways

There are many reasons to consider Charlotte’s Web for your CBD needs, ranging from its commitment to small batch testing to its passion for holistic health and wellness. The Stanley Brothers have derived some excellent and affordable products from the hemp plant, and I’m pleased to say that I’d recommend them to not only to anyone seeking an upgrade to their wellness routine, but also to my own family and friends.

Review of Thrive CBD Oil

I received a bottle of Thrive’s CBD oil to try, for the purposes of this review. However all opinions are my own.

There’s a new brand of CBD coming to your virtual shopping baskets. It’s called Thrive – and I was excited to try it and learn more about the brand to find out what’s different about it.

So what’s different?

The first thing I noticed was that it comes in a small matte purple bottle. Even the cardboard box I eased it out of had a silky, upmarket feel – as if it could contain an expensive skin cream or even perfume. A few violet-coloured, branded information cards were tucked into the box it was all delivered in. Thrive has definitely spent a lot of time on their marketing, getting the colours just right – a calming soft violet. Just opening the box feels special, like you’re opening a present.

And then you get why.

Unlike the marketing of many other CBD oil brands, which seem to focus on sports performance or nutrition, Thrive pushes the whole idea of YOU. Taking time out. Calming and slowing down, and focusing on what you need, mentally. Along with an information card there was a card in the box with a list of things to do just for yourself, and also a checklist that you can put on your fridge and tick off the good habits you’ve committed to every day. You know, like taking your CBD oil and having a hot shower. A quiet cup of tea. Those kinds of things.

The product itself contains the same ingredients – CBD (hemp extract), MCT oil and flavour extracts – as other brands I’ve seen. So as well as the personal wellness/’me time’ idea being something new, Thrive have a brand new flavour that I’ve never seen before in CBD-world: Blood Orange. And oh my gosh it’s good. Drop the liquid under your tongue and you immediately get a burst of orange but less refreshing or zesty than you’d expect and a lot more chocolate orange. I’ve been used to standard flavours like lemon and peppermint up until now and this was a refreshing change for me. Thrive also make a peppermint flavour, if you’re interested in that.

As for the CBD, again, it’s THC free so won’t get you high (thanks to a patented cold ethanol extraction process), comes in 500mg strength and their cannabis is organically grown without any harsh pesticides and the oil is lab tested. Pretty standard. The matte coating on the bottle is not only for prettiness – although we’re warned on the box not to leave our oil out in sunlight, I imagine this goes some way in protecting the oil inside from inadvertent sunlight exposure.

It’s downright delicious, they have lots of tips on looking after yourself spiritually and mentally and it comes in a pretty bottle. The CBD oil inside is great quality, THC, organic and lab tested to all the right laws. I guess it’s quite similar to a lot of other brands on the market, but does appeal to those of us who will want to slow down and snuggle up with a good book once in a while. Top marks for such appealing and clever marketing – lots of wellness tips over on their Instagram too – and for developing a brand new flavour that I’m sure will appeal to many people.

is cbd legal in wyoming

Is weed legal in Wyoming?

No. Wyoming has not legalized recreational or medical marijuana, therefore it is against the law to use or possess cannabis in the state.

However, hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) products that contain less than 0.3% THC by weight are legal to use and possess.

Legislation history

On March 6, 2019, the state enacted HB0171 , which was signed into law by Gov. Mark Gordon. It gave the Department of Agriculture authority over hemp production and regulation.

After the signing of HB0171, the Department of Agriculture submitted its plan for regulating hemp in the state to the US Department of Agriculture. The act formally removed hemp-derived CBD from Wyoming’s list of controlled substances.

There were at least two attempts by advocates to place marijuana legalization on the state ballot, including an effort to get it in front of voters in 2018 . But advocates failed to gather enough signatures to qualify.

In Wyoming, the penalties for those caught with marijuana are among the harshest in the United States. Being found under the influence of marijuana is considered a misdemeanor punishable by six months imprisonment and a $750 fine. Growing, drying, or processing cannabis can result in a misdemeanor, six months imprisonment, and a $1,000 fine. Possession of less than 3 ounces (85 grams) can result in a misdemeanor, 12 months imprisonment, and a $1,000 fine. Additionally, possession within 500 feet of a school is punishable by an additional fine of $500.

The full list of penalties can be found on the Wyoming State Legislature website.

Cannabis & CBD in Wyoming – Are They Legal?

Welcome to the latest round of legislative meanderings concerning marijuana and CBD! Those familiar with the complexities of these laws are doubtless saying “not again” as they light a joint to relax their frayed nerves. Of course, only residents of 11 states plus Washington, D.C., can do this without an MMJ card. Even in some of those locations, recreational cannabis isn’t yet for sale!

Then there are the other 22 states that have medical marijuana programs. Again, a handful has yet to implement the program in any meaningful way. As for CBD, the rules surrounding it are the stuff of migraine headaches. Like cannabis itself, the compound, CBD, isn’t federally legal. However, hemp that contains CBD, is!

The 2018 Farm Bill led us to the current merry-go-round of confusion, consternation, and condemnation. You see, each state is allowed to make rules regarding cannabidiol. Few of them have provided any clarity whatsoever. We have a truly bizarre situation where marijuana is recreationally legal, but CBD is technically illegal in at least one state (we’re looking at you, California).

With CBD at the whims of state and even local lawmakers, things are getting messy. At Wayofleaf, we continue to delve into the cannabidiol labyrinth, in the hope we don’t run into the minotaur! Today, we take a look at Wyoming and see if cannabis and CBD are legal in that state. At least on this occasion, the rules are somewhat clear!

Does Wyoming Permit Marijuana?

In a nutshell, heck no! Wyoming has among the strictest anti-marijuana stances in the United States. There is disagreement over when the state first banned the plant. In the Pursuit of Oblivion: A Social History of Drugs, Richard Davenport-Hines suggests prohibition occurred in 1929. However, in The SAGE Encyclopedia of Pharmacology and Society, Sarah E Boslaugh writes that the ban happened in 1913.

Either way, Wyoming has remained firmly against cannabis ever since. In 2015, the Wyoming chapter of NORML gained signatures to get MMJ on the 2016 ballot. However, the state’s ballot initiative requirements are among the toughest in the nation. In the state’s House of Representatives, legislation to decriminalize marijuana has failed several times.

This is despite a 2014 poll showing that 72% of the population supported the use of marijuana if approved by a doctor. A survey from 2016 showed that MMJ support had increased to 81%. An even more recent poll put the percentage in favor at 86%! Alas, there was no movement in the state legislature when it adjourned its session in the first half of 2020.

At present, without decriminalization, there are strict penalties in play. Being caught ‘under the influence’ of cannabis is a misdemeanor in Wyoming! It comes with a potential jail term of six months. Possession of less than three ounces is also a misdemeanor but has a possible prison sentence of up to a year. Possession of over three ounces is a felony, and you could spend up to five years in jail. Sale of any amount is a more serious felony, and comes with a maximum sentence of ten years!

According to a 2018 ACLU report, African-Americans in Wyoming are 5.2 times more likely to get arrested for marijuana possession. This is despite a similar rate of usage.

What Is the Situation with CBD in Wyoming?

It is better news on the CBD front, though even that is only a recent development. For a very long time, the state of Wyoming resisted any attempts to legalize CBD for any reason. That changed in 2015 when a law took effect and allowed the use of CBD oil to treat seizures. At that point, you were not legally permitted to use it for any other reason. It was an incredibly narrow law with no in-state access.

At the time, you could only apply through the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH). You could use medical CBD after a doctor prescribed it to treat seizures caused by epilepsy. You needed to apply for a Hemp Extract Registration Card. It cost $150 and required annual renewal, just like MMJ cards in other states.

Even those with intractable epilepsy could only use CBD oil with a maximum THC content of 0.3%. It was also necessary to register with the Hemp Extract Registry!

Common Sense Prevails in Wyoming

The above was an awful lot of trouble to go to just to use CBD oil! After years of procrastination, the state legislature finally acted. On March 6, 2019, the state enacted HB0171. Republican Governor, Mark Gordon, signed it into law. It resulted in the end of the Hemp Extract Registry and changed the CBD industry in Wyoming for the better.

HB0171 made the Wyoming Department of Agriculture the rulemaking authority for the production and regulation of hemp. The bill came around three months after the American President signed the Farm Bill into law. After years of fighting against cannabidiol, the bill passed through with ease. The House voted 56-3 in favor, and the Senate also voted heavily in favor, 26-3.

What the act did was to remove hemp from the Wyoming Controlled Substances Act. Crucially, it also removed CBD. This is something that the Farm Bill did not do, and would frankly have alleviated a lot of confusion if it had.

Therefore, Wyoming residents can freely purchase CBD oil in their state, as long as it comes from hemp, and has less than 0.3% THC. However, please remember that the FDA maintains regulatory authority once hemp-derived CBD products are sold across state lines. If you use any marijuana product or anything with more than 0.3% THC, you are at risk of one of Wyoming’s strict penalties.

Does Wyoming Have an Industrial Hemp Program?

Yes. It is a significant part of HB0171. The Farm Bill permits industrial hemp cultivation throughout the United States. However, each state must submit a plan for approval. Wyoming did so in January 2020 and received good news within a few weeks. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approved the Wyoming hemp regulatory plan. It granted authority to the WDA to regulate the Wyoming hemp industry.

The next step for the WDA was to implement emergency rules, which will remain in place for 120 days. During this period, the WDA aims to go through the standard rule promulgation process. This includes a public comment period and a final rule. At the time, the WDA Director, Doug Miyamoto, said hemp was a new crop with the attached inherent risks.

In the meantime, Wyoming farmers have come together to learn more about hemp. The state certainly has advantageous climate conditions for the crop. Justin Loeffler is part of the GreenTree Ag LLC and believes the short growing season is a huge help. His company planted 11 varieties of hemp in Colorado on 60 acres of land. They selected an area of the state with similar climate conditions to Wyoming. It hopes to learn enough to help farmers combat the challenges they are sure to face.

A considerable majority of the hemp grown in the United States is for the CBD industry. It is potentially an enormous cash crop, and it is no surprise to learn that thousands of farmers want to try. However, there are also plenty of risks attached. Issues like cross-pollination, flooding, and pests can all damage a crop. Also, farmers that produce hemp with more than 0.3% THC will see their plants destroyed.

Final Thoughts on CBD and Cannabis Laws in Wyoming

The prohibition on marijuana in Wyoming has lasted for more than a century. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon. At present, it is one of 17 states with no MMJ program. With various attempts to bring an MMJ bill to the legislature failing, we fear it will be several years before Wyoming makes a serious effort at permitting cannabis. This is despite the overwhelming majority of state residents saying they support MMJ!

At least Wyoming now allows the sale, possession, and use of CBD. However, this process also took several years, and only came into effect in 2019. Residents can now use hemp-derived CBD with a maximum of 0.3% THC, without a doctor’s prescription. The Wyoming hemp industry will start in earnest this year. It is interesting to see how many farmers try to make the most out of this promising cash crop. Even if it doesn’t make the CBD market, there are a ton of other uses for hemp!

Cannabis and CBD laws are difficult to understand, and Wyoming is no exception. We aim to clear up some of the confusion in this quick guide.

So we were truly shocked at the biopsy that the doctors did to my mother. She has Lymphoma and i didn’t really wanna believe it. She was still very much happy along with her friends being in numerous trips. Right now she’s bedridden eats through the NGT and has an oxygen mask on. I was thinking about giving her the CBD oil i mean i’ve been researching and hearing a lot of testimonials in the internet lately about this. Should i go for it? Thoughts about it?

  • Biopsy
  • CBD

I hope someone else may be able to answer this better than I can. The first port of call would be your mother’s doctor to ask whether it would conflict with treatment they are giving.

If they have no objection then you would have to research very carefully to find a quality product .

There are probably a lot of people out there trying to make a fast buck out of other peoples’ desperation. I would hazard a guess that the main benefits might be in symptom alleviation. Also it is quite expensive. Also dietary and exercise (when possible) changes are very important in building strength to withstand illness and treatment. Best wishes .

You have nothing to lose, it won’t cause any harm. I have been using it since my diagnosis in Jan 2017 on watch and wait and have been in remission since. Can I say it is the CBD, well no but you can’t say it isn’t either. It also helps with sleeping, joint pain etc.

Hi, not to bud in on this conversation.. I see you are on the watch and weight .. I have also been for a few years. I am struggling with that whole post cancer life. I battles for 7 years and was thankful to enter a risky treatment that saved my life. Sadly those years have taken a toll and it seems like every year is getting worse. Does the CBD truly help with pain? I feel like I am 90. I feel worse now then during treatment. My oncologist just suggested me try it.

I agree with you. I use CBD a Beautiful lady makes mine for free. It has helped my neropathy and neck back pain. I sleep better also. Had a scare this last month. So had pet scan and cat scan. Having biopsy tomorrow. But good thing I don’t have any swollen lymph nodes anywhere but left side of my neck. Had in peracardium area and chest wall left side neck before. I believe the CBD and the RSO that I use got ride of that. Only thing done Diff Rent since whach and wait in 2014. Does not hurt.

sorry to hear about your mother, lymphoma can sneak up on you without symptoms before you know it. I used (smoked) cannabis through out chemo treatments and it helped with nausea, sleeping and as an appetite stimulant. I discontinued smoking due to lung problems, and have been using CBD lately for help with sleeping. effects are very subtle as far as i can tell, but some people swear by it for pain, anxiety

CBD is more for treating nausea while on chemo. In this sense, it might relieve some symptoms, but it will not cure or slow the progression of the lymphoma. You didn’t say anything about the treatment she is receiving, her age or the stage of her lymphoma. Normally lymphoma responds well to chemo and Rituximab (Mabthera) .

It’s whatever the doctor needs we give it. I mean the prices are no joke(the medicine) i don’t think my mom can withstand the chemo at this point we really don’t know what to do tbh

Normally if it is not the very fast spreading lymphoma, there are signs like night sweats and swollen lymph glands, etc. It is not common for someone to become bedridden with an oxygen mask at the time that they are diagnosed. I think with lymphoma, you can never be too weak for chemo, because it needs to be treated aggressively. If your mom has the fast spreading, more aggressive type of lymphoma, it is actually easier to treat. The faster the lymphoma spreads, the better it responds to treatment. I would recommend her seeing an oncologist and getting into a treatment program as fast as possible.

So we were truly shocked at the biopsy that the doctors did to my mother. She has Lymphoma and i didn't really wanna believe it. She was still very much happy along with her friends being in numerous…

glaucoma and cbd oil

Is CBD Oil Good For Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world. According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, nearly 3 million Americans suffer from the eye condition. Surprisingly, half of them are unaware until the condition is severe. Glaucoma is prevalent among African-Americans. This article will look at how CBD oil can help alleviate many of the symptoms associated with glaucoma.

What is Glaucoma?

Also known as the “sneak thief of sight,” glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by abnormal pressure in the eye – known as intraocular pressure (IOP). The eye produces a fluid known as aqueous humor that drains in the eye continuously. If the fluid doesn’t circulate properly, it builds up, causing increased pressure in the eyeball. Also, glaucoma may be caused by the reduced blood supply to the optic nerve fibres. If not treated in the early stages, it may lead to a total loss of vision.

Symptoms of glaucoma
  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing halos around bright lights
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Eye pain
  • Redness in the eye

Common Types of Glaucoma

  1. Open-Angle Glaucoma

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma, with nearly 90% of all glaucoma cases. The condition occurs when the aqueous humor gets blocked and doesn’t circulate properly. This leads to increased pressure build-up. Usually, there are no warning signs for several years. However, if the condition is detected in its early stages, it can be treated.

  1. Angle-Closure Glaucoma

Angle-closure glaucoma is a relatively rare condition whereby intraocular pressure rises rapidly without any warning. This form of glaucoma happens when the drainage canals get blocked since the iris is not wide, like for a healthy eye. Therefore, the pupil enlarges too much or too fast.

Could CBD oil be the holistic treatment glaucoma patients have been waiting for?

CBD for Glaucoma: Can it Work?

Keep in mind that there’s no permanent cure for glaucoma. In fact, the study of the effects of CBD Hemp Oil for glaucoma is in its infancy. However, the majority of the studies showed that cannabis or stains with high THC content might be a viable and effective treatment for glaucoma. Cannabis reduces intraocular pressure, the primary cause of glaucoma.

That said, it means you’ll be high almost every time. While this may be thrilling to some people, it may not be pleasing to others. This is where CBD (cannabidiol) comes in. CBD is the non-psychoactive compound of the marijuana plant, and some studies suggest that it may be useful in treating glaucoma with the help of the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Glaucoma and the Endocannabinoid System

The endocannabinoid system is a complex cell-signaling system that controls the body’s operational functions such as response to pain, mood, appetite, sleep, and immune response. Regarding glaucoma, the cannabinoid receptors regulate intraocular pressure.

Researchers are hoping to create medications for glaucoma patients from cannabinoids like CBD that can target ocular issues to reduce intraocular pressure. With this, it can help manage retina cells from permanent damage that leads to loss of sight.

Over the past few decades, there has been evidence that CBD oil may help treat glaucoma. According to a 1979 study published by the International Journal of Pharmacology and Biopharmacology, examine the effects of CBD oil on 16 patients with open-angle glaucoma. After administering CBD oil on glaucoma patients, there was a reduction in blood pressure. As a result, a decrease in intraocular pressure – the primary cause of glaucoma.

Final Thoughts on CBD for Glaucoma

When CBD is administered properly, it could potentially treat glaucoma. CBD vaso-relaxant properties could increase the blood flow in the ocular tissues. Also, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD have the potential to provide relief for glaucoma.

CBD in marijuana may worsen glaucoma, raise eye pressure

Research in mice suggests over-the-counter substance could possess unknown side effects

One of the most commonly proposed uses of medical marijuana is to treat glaucoma.

But a study from researchers at Indiana University has found that a major chemical component in the substance appears to worsen the primary underpinning of the disease: a rise in pressure inside the eye.

The chemical that causes this rise in pressure is cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-psychoactive ingredient in cannabis that is increasingly marketed to consumers in products such as oil, gummies, creams and health food. It is also approved in many states as a treatment for conditions such as pediatric epilepsy.

The study was reported Dec. 14 in the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

“This study raises important questions about the relationship between the primary ingredients in cannabis and their effect on the eye,” said Alex Straiker, an associate scientist in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, who led the study. “It also suggests the need to understand more about the potential undesirable side effects of CBD, especially due to its use in children.”

The study, which was conducted in mice, specifically found that CBD caused an increase in pressure inside the eye of 18 percent for at least four hours after use.

Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the primary psychoactive ingredient of marijuana, was found to effectively lower pressure in the eye, as has been previously reported. But the study found that the use of CBD in combination with THC blocked this effect.

Specifically, the study found that male mice experienced a drop in eye pressure of nearly 30 percent eight hours after exposure to THC alone. A lower pressure drop of 22 percent was also observed after four hours in male mice.

The effect was weaker in female mice. This group experienced a pressure drop of only 17 percent after four hours. No difference in eye pressure was measured after eight hours.

The results suggest that females may be less affected by THC, though it isn’t clear whether this extends to the substance’s psychoactive effects.

“This difference between males and females — and the fact that CBD seems to worsen eye pressure, the primary risk factor for glaucoma — are both important aspects of this study,” Straiker said. “It’s also notable that CBD appears to actively oppose the beneficial effects of THC.”

By comparing the effect of these substances on mice without specific neuroreceptors affected by THC and CBD, the IU researchers were also able to identify the two specific neuroreceptors — named CB1 and GPR18 — by which the first substance lowered pressure inside the eye.

“There were studies over 45 years ago that found evidence that THC lowers pressure inside the eye, but no one’s ever identified the specific neuroreceptors involved in the process until this study,” Straiker said. “These results could have important implications for future research on the use of cannabis as a therapy for intraocular pressure.”

A study has found that CBD — a major chemical component in marijuana — appears to increase pressure inside the eye of mice, suggesting the use of the substance in the treatment of glaucoma may actually worsen the condition.

You’ve probably heard about the therapeutic relief that cannabidiol (CBD), a non-intoxicating compound found in the cannabis plant, may offer for various conditions, from chronic pain to anxiety issues. While many people could benefit from using CBD, they may be reluctant to try it due to the fear of failing a drug test or the general stigma that still surrounds cannabis in some places.

While CBD does not produce the same intoxicating effects as THC, it does get stored in the body. Most cannabis drug tests only screen for THC, but some people may still want to know how long does CBD stay in your system?

Despite the legalization of hemp-derived CBD products in the U.S. thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill, there is still a need for further research into how CBD interacts with the body, as well as the amount of time it remains detectable in the body after use.

However, using existing research on CBD and its interaction with the human body, we can attempt to better understand how long CBD oil stays in the system.

How long does CBD oil stay in your system?

The time that CBD remains detectable in the body will depend on several factors:

  • Metabolism: A person’s metabolism plays a prominent role in how fast the CBD is metabolized and eventually excreted from the body. Another aspect that could impact the effects of CBD is whether it’s taken with food or on an empty stomach, as certain foods could enhance bioavailability and increase overall CBD concentration in your body.
  • Frequency of Use: How often CBD is used will also influence the amount of time it remains in the body.
  • CBD Dosage: The amount of CBD taken at a time will influence how long the cannabinoid remains in the system.
  • Method of Administration: Both the effects and presence of CBD in the body are also contingent on how the cannabinoid was introduced into the body. For instance, smoking or vaping CBD allows it to take effect almost immediately, while ingestion will delay the onset for an hour or two.

In a randomized, double-blind, controlled 2005 study published in “Therapeutic Drug Monitoring,” volunteers were given cannabis extract with 2.5 milligrams of THC and 1.35 milligrams of CBD. The research team found that CBD was only detectable in the blood for up to nine hours after ingestion.

A 1991 study published in “Pharmacology Biochemistry & Behavior” examined the concentration of CBD in the blood after high doses daily. Over a six-week period, the research team administered a daily dose of 700 milligrams of CBD to 14 Huntington’s disease patients. One week after the dosing ceased, the CBD remaining in the blood was just 1.5 nanograms per milliliter and was “virtually undetectable” thereafter.

A 2018 review of existing CBD studies found that the estimated half-life of CBD was two to five days for those who took a daily oral dose. Other delivery methods delivered varied half-lifes.

While the time that CBD is detectable in the body will depend on the aforementioned factors, we can deduce that CBD will likely leave the system after a week or two. Photo by: Gina Coleman/Weedmaps

While the time that CBD is detectable in the body will depend on the aforementioned factors, we can deduce that CBD will likely leave the system after a week or two.

That provides some insight into how long CBD remains in the blood, but there is little research on how long is CBD detectable in urine. In a 2016 study reported in the “Journal of Pain,” participants were given different types of CBD-rich cannabis products, including oils, capsules, and flower. Two hours after administration, urine samples from all 15 subjects tested positive for CBD. The researchers followed one participant after the last day of administration and found that CBD was no longer detectable in the urine after 24 hours.

It’s important to note that, while existing evidence shows us that CBD can definitely be detected in the body for a certain period of time, most cannabis drug tests specifically look for the presence of THC. Therefore, accurate information on how long CBD stays in the body remains limited compared with THC.

How long do CBD oil effects last?

Consumption method plays a crucial role in determining how long it will take to feel the effects of CBD and how long they will last.

Ingestion is the most common method for CBD consumption. Administering a couple of drops of CBD oil directly into the mouth is certainly a convenient way to reap the benefits of this therapeutic cannabinoid. However, ingestion is not necessarily the most effective consumption method for those who want to feel the effects of CBD immediately. Swallowing the oil prevents CBD from entering the bloodstream right away, sending it first through the digestive tract and eventually onto the liver, where it is broken down before finally reaching the bloodstream.

Studies show that when CBD compounds are metabolized by the liver, they undergo what is called the “first pass effect,” where enzymes in the liver reduce CBD concentration before the remainder is finally sent to the bloodstream and circulated throughout the body. While oral consumption of CBD has become popular for its ease of use, it’s a rather inefficient method of consumption compared with inhalation or sublingual administration. This is because only about 5% of swallowed CBD ends up in the bloodstream, meaning this method provides low bioavailability.

With ingestion, it could take anywhere from 1 to 2 hours before the effects of CBD finally set in. Photo by: Gina Coleman/Weedmaps

Whether you’re ingesting CBD oil or CBD-infused edibles, it ultimately goes through the same lengthy digestive process and reduces the total CBD concentration in the bloodstream. With ingestion, it could take anywhere from one to two hours before the effects of CBD finally set in.

The sublingual method is considered to be more effective than ingestion. CBD oil can be consumed sublingually by placing a few drops under the tongue and holding it for two to four minutes, then using the tongue to rub it into the inside of the cheeks before swallowing the remainder. Using this method, CBD is transferred to the bloodstream via the mucous membranes located in the mouth, completely bypassing the digestive system and liver. Sublingual consumption leads to higher bioavailability compared to oral ingestion.

Inhalation is also an effective delivery method for CBD due to its rapid absorption and the efficiency of the lungs at transferring CBD into the bloodstream (better bioavailability). Whether you’re smoking a high-CBD strain or taking a draw from a CBD vape pen, the interaction with the body remains the same. When CBD is inhaled, the cannabinoids are sent directly to the lungs, where they are rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream and put into circulation.

Existing evidence suggests that CBD reaches peak blood concentration within three minutes after inhalation, meaning the effects can be felt shortly after use. Accordingly, this method is appealing for those seeking immediate pain relief.

Topical CBD comes in many forms: infused into lotions, creams, salves, and other health and wellness products. It can be applied directly to the skin where it may be absorbed through the surface of the skin and interact with localized cannabinoid receptors. In certain cases, CBD-infused topicals should be applied liberally to overcome the low cannabinoid absorption rate of the skin.

Will CBD show up on a drug test?

In most cases, it’s highly unlikely that CBD oil will cause a positive test result in a drug screening. Most drug tests are developed to look specifically for the presence of THC or related substances. On top of that, employers generally abide by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA) guidelines, which include detection for THC but not CBD.

Keep in mind that even hemp-derived CBD products are legally allowed to contain up to 0.3% THC. This could cause hesitation in some CBD-curious consumers who don’t want THC in their system or to risk a false positive result on a potential drug test. However, the chances of failing a drug test from using hemp-extracted CBD oil are extremely slim. You would need to take an exorbitant dosage of full-spectrum CBD oil (estimates range from 1,000 to 2,000 milligrams per day) to risk a positive drug test result.

For those who want to be extra-cautious and utilize CBD with no THC, a broad-spectrum oil or products that contain pure CBD isolate should do the trick. Broad-spectrum oil is refined to exclude THC, while CBD isolates contain no THC or other plant-based cannabinoids. To ensure that your CBD contains no THC, it’s important to source products from reputable manufacturers that provide a certificate of analysis from a third-party testing lab.

There are different types of drug tests with varying detection thresholds for THC. The most commonly used drug screening method is the urine test, which typically has a lower threshold for detection. Under the SAMHSA framework, the cutoff limit for the presence of THC is 50 nanograms per milliliter. A nanogram is one-billionth of a gram.

In the rare case that you test positive for THC after taking CBD oil, you can always try to explain the situation to your employer or request another test.

How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System

CBD is becoming increasingly popular. And with more and more people using CBD supplements, many have questions about how long CBD products remain in the body after consumption. Below we’ll explain how the body processes CBD, what the substance’s half-life is, and much more.

How CBD works

CBD works primarily by interacting with the endocannabinoid system, a regulatory network that keeps the body functioning at its best. Unlike other cannabinoids, CBD doesn’t bind directly with the ECS’s receptors, but works behind the scenes to deliver its unique effects.

The situation becomes a little more complicated because you can take CBD in a variety of different ways, with the method of administration playing a pivotal role in how the compound is metabolised (broken down and distributed around the body).

If you take CBD orally, for example, it has to pass through the digestive system before it can take effect. But, when taken sublingually (under the tongue) or inhaled through a vaporizer, CBD can bypass the digestive system and get to work faster.

How is CBD processed?

Once consumed and absorbed, CBD travels to the liver where it’s metabolised into a variety of compounds that your cells can use. This metabolism is carried out by the same group of enzymes responsible for breaking down roughly 60% of all medications available on the market.

From the liver, CBD metabolites move around the body, where they may interact with a wide variety of receptors.

Although that outlines the basic journey of CBD, what we’re interested in is how long the interaction between CBD metabolites and receptors last—how long CBD stays in your system. To understand that, we need to explain the concept of “half-life”.

What is half-life?

Half-life is the term used to measure the amount of time it takes for a compound to be reduced to half its original amount or effectiveness in the body. It’s gauged by measuring blood plasma for metabolites of the compound in question. From the plasma, drug metabolites are either removed from the body or translocated to another type of bodily fluid.

Half-life is typically measured by administering a single dose of a compound, then testing blood plasma for traces of the drug at regular intervals. The amount of the drug in the plasma will usually increase, reach a peak, and then start to decline.

Using the information obtained while measuring CBD’s half-life, scientists can work out how long CBD stays in the body. You cannot do this yourself at home, but we can use their data to provide a general timeframe.

How long does CBD stay in your system?

The exact half-life of CBD isn’t 100% clear, but we can explore some of the existing studies. There’s evidence that suggests that CBD has a half-life of roughly 2–5 days. This is based on a study involving 14 patients with Huntington’s disease. The patients were given doses of around 700mg of CBD per day for 6 weeks. Note that these doses are much higher than a standard recommended dose.

In another study, half-life of CBD was evaluated based on a single dose in the amount of 20mg and 18.8–19.4mg administered intravenously and smoked respectively. The half-life was accordingly estimated at 18–30h and 27–35h.

But, and this is an important but, that timescale will vary from one person to the next. How long CBD stays in your system is also affected by several biological factors, as well as the way you consume it.

As a general rule of thumb, the more efficient the consumption method, the faster CBD is processed, and the quicker it leaves our system. So, back to our earlier example, orally consumed CBD should stay in your system longer, compared to sublingual application or vaping. It’s a delicate balancing act, but one that you’ll need to experiment with to find out what works for you.

What affects the half-life of CBD?

Whenever talking about the metabolism of any compound, it’s essential to realise that everyone’s body is a little different, and several biological factors can influence your ability to process compounds such as CBD.

CBD is fat-soluble, so a small portion may get stored in fat cells. The cannabinoid can stay in your system for a little longer if you have a high body fat percentage.

• Efficiency of your metabolism

Our metabolism is a combination of chemical reactions, one of which includes the conversion of food to energy. The faster your metabolism, the quicker substances (including CBD) are broken down, processed and eliminated.

• Method of consumption

How you consume CBD not only alters the potency but the duration of effects. The method of consumption also goes hand in hand with bioavailability. Generally speaking, administration methods with greater bioavailability will also leave your system faster.

• Amount of CBD consumed

The more CBD you take, the longer it takes for your body to process it. Be careful though, high doses may produce mild side effects, so it’s essential to find what works for you.

• Purity and strength of the oil/supplement you’re using

The higher the concentration of a CBD oil or supplement, the longer it takes your liver to process, and the longer active ingredients stay in your system.

How long does CBD stay in your system—bottom line

CBD is a very unique and complex compound that can affect everyone slightly differently. Unfortunately, studies have not yet been able to pinpoint the exact half-life of cannabidiol. The half-life of CBD can be estimated to be between 18 and 35 hours, while other studies suggest that the half-life of CBD could be up to 5 days.

However, remember that these are ball-park figures. As we mentioned earlier, a lot of different factors can influence the rate at which your body processes and metabolises compounds like CBD. Until further studies look into the half-life of cannabidiol, these figures are the closest we’ve got.

cbd oil for period cramps

Cannabinoids & Your Period

  • Should I take CBD oil for period cramps?
  • How do CBD and ibuprofen compare?
  • How can I get the best benefits from CBD oil for my period?

It’s that time of the month again — time to call in sick, cancel plans, curl up in bed with a hot water bottle, and try to distract yourself with a non-stop stream of movies and TV.

If this sounds like your monthly ritual, you are not alone. Up to 90% of reproductive-age women suffer from painful periods — the medical term for it is “dysmenorrhea” — and it can completely derail your daily life.

Cannabinoids & Suppositories Help

More and more women are reporting that CBD and THC products are the best tools they have for treating painful periods. But how do they stack up when compared to NSAIDs like Ibuprofen?

Quite well, it turns out, but it’s worth a deeper look at why they work — exactly how cannabinoids’ anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, muscle-relaxing effects interact with your period.

This touches on the actual causes of pain & discomfort during your period, and how additional natural remedies can help combat these symptoms.

Move over NSAIDs and heating pads! Read on to discover why cannabinoids might become your new favorite companion when your period comes to town.

Your Uterus: Prepping for a Visit

In people who have periods, the uterus diligently prepares itself all month.

First, your body’s increasing estrogen told your uterus to build up its endometrial tissue. Then, after you ovulated, and the boost of progesterone helped plump up that tissue with arteries and blood — prepping to give a warm welcome to an incoming embryo … or in this case to prepare for menstruation.

Goodbye, Progesterone

Once your body discovers it won’t be hosting a guest, your progesterone levels decline — telling your uterus to roll up the welcome mat.

Your body takes back what it can from the endometrium, shrinking the tissue and cutting off blood flow to its spiral-shaped arteries. Without a proper blood supply, your endometrial tissue prepares to shed, and you likely begin experiencing pangs of pain.

Without progesterone, the endometrium loses its protection – creating a domino effect, and the perfect conditions for inflammation.

Prostaglandins: Inflaming the Uterus

While your progesterone was declining, inflammatory chemicals called prostaglandins were increasing. Prostaglandins (particularly one called PGF2⍺) peak during menstruation, creating the following effects:

  • Inflammation : certain prostaglandins trigger an inflammatory response, which leads to more pain.
  • Pain sensitization : prostaglandins and other inflammatory compounds can actually prime pain-perceiving nerves to become more sensitive.
  • Vasoconstriction : the prostaglandins rampant during menstruation cause blood vessels to constrict, inhibiting blood flow to the endometrial tissue.
  • Uterine contractions : People with higher prostaglandin levels have stronger, more painful contractions and doctors are finally acknowledging that this pain can be as intense as heart attack pain.
  • Heavy bleeding : Unusually heavy periods could result from excessive inflammation, which increases tissue damage. People with heavy bleeding have higher levels of the enzyme the produces prostaglandins (COX-2), and medications to combat this process can decrease menstruation .
  • Diarrhea : In addition to uterus contractions, prostaglandins also trigger smooth muscle contractions in the digestive tract — which might push your last few meals out a bit too soon.

(Note: some people claim that having sex helps to jump-start their periods — scientists believe that the prostaglandins in semen could contribute to this effect.)

We’re not trying to say that prostaglandins are all bad. They’re essential for a healthy, functioning menstrual cycle.

However, numerous studies indicate that women with higher levels of prostaglandins also have more painful or heavier periods — and treatments that lower prostaglandin levels can be highly effective .

NSAIDs Work, Sort Of

When their periods kick in, most women reach for an Ibuprofen or similar NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug). Why are NSAIDs the most frequently-prescribed treatment for menstrual pain?

NSAIDs work by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for producing prostaglandins (COX-2). This means that NSAIDs could potentially decrease all the symptoms aggravated by prostaglandins — including inflammation, contractions and pain.

Unfortunately, NSAIDs can also have unpleasant gastrointestinal side effects, because they inhibit another enzyme (COX-1). For this reason, NSAIDs should be used with moderation, and people with certain digestive issues might want to avoid them entirely.

CBD: a Better Alternative?

Recently, scientists discovered that — similar to NSAIDs — CBD also inhibits the prostaglandin-producing enzyme . However — unlike NSAIDs — CBD preferentially inhibits COX-2 over COX-1, which means its anti-inflammatory benefits come without the gastrointestinal side effects.

Added bonus: Not only does CBD inhibit the COX-2 enzyme, but both CBD and THC physically stop your DNA from producing so much of this enzyme in the first place (via the PPARγ receptor).

Additional Cannabinoid Benefits

By decreasing prostaglandin levels during your period, you can reduce inflammation, pain and cramps. However, you cannot entirely eliminate prostaglandins.

This means that you could benefit from combining a prostaglandin-reducing treatment with other treatments that target the discomforts caused by prostaglandins.

CBD and other cannabinoids can also treat painful menstrual cramps in the following ways:

  • Anti-inflammatory: Cannabinoids have many anti-inflammatory activities beyond reducing production of inflammatory prostaglandins. For instance, THC activates endocannabinoid receptors ( CB2 ) located on your immune system’s killer cells ( macrophages ). When these receptors are activated, they prevent macrophages from releasing inflammatory proteins ( cytokines ).
  • Pain-relieving: Although prostaglandins and other inflammatory molecules can make pain-perceiving nerves more sensitive, cannabinoids fight back by desensitizing these nerves. Both CBD and THC target nerve receptors that help decrease the sensation of pain ( TRPV1 and CB1 , respectively). Additionally, not only does CBD desensitize TRPV1, but those soothing effects can spread to neighboring pain receptors.
  • Muscle-relaxing : Menstrual cramps are exacerbated by contractions of the smooth muscle lining the uterus — and cannabinoids are widely recognized to relax smooth muscles. THC and CBD both target different receptors embedded in the muscle tissue to relax contractions .
  • Vascular-relaxing : Blood vessels are also lined with smooth muscle, and when cannabinoids trigger this smooth muscle to relax, blood flow increases. Increased blood flow could help provide relief to oxygen-starved tissues, further decreasing painful cramps.

Natural Remedies for Cramps

  • Apply heat : Hot water bottles may seem old-fashioned, but they can bring as much relief from menstrual cramps as NSAIDs — and oftentimes much faster. Heat increases blood flow to the area, which soothes the overworked muscles and delivers oxygen to oxygen-starved tissues. Some scientists also think that heat desensitizes the same pain receptors that CBD works on.
  • Fish oil : Interestingly enough, multiple studies have demonstrated that daily fish oil supplements decrease pain and reliance on NSAIDs during periods. It turns out that prostaglandins are synthesized from omega fatty acids, and a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids could shift your body away from producing inflammatory prostaglandins.
  • Magnesium : Do you ever crave chocolate around this time of the month? Women who take magnesium supplements during their periods have reduced pain and reduced inflammatory prostaglandin levels . Foods like chocolate, lentils and avocados are high in magnesium — so go ahead and feed the craving.
  • Treat early : Many doctors suggest that it’s best to start taking painkillers an hour or more before the cramps start. This is true whether you’re using NSAIDs, CBD, or other cannabinoid blends. If you hold off treatment until you’re in excruciating pain, the prostaglandins will already be in full demolition mode and harder to bring under control.
  • Discuss your treatment plan with a doctor : Sometimes painful cramps and/or heavy bleeding can be a symptom of an underlying problem like endometriosis ( another painful condition that can be soothed by cannabinoids ). We encourage you to talk with your doctor about your symptoms and treatment plan in order to rule out other health problems, particularly if your symptoms don’t improve with standard treatments. Your doctor can help you determine if there are surgical or hormonal treatments that could be more effective.

Finding Relief With Cannabinoid Suppositories

Many women are shocked and surprised to experience how effective cannabinoids are at relieving menstrual cramps (especially cannabinoid suppositories ).

But the science is pretty clear about why: CBD targets the cause — inflammatory prostaglandins — while also relieving the symptoms (especially with help from a little THC).

Perhaps this is why women and people who bleed have been using cannabis to treat period pain for millennia . Though there are increasing numbers of doctors and scientists who know why cannabinoids work to relieve menstrual cramps, many more of them are only just beginning to hear from their female patients about how well cannabinoids work for their periods.

If you’re considering treating your menstrual cramps with cannabinoids for the first time, we encourage you to read testimonials from other customers . You may also be curious to know how cannabinoids help to soothe endometriosis .

12 Ways to Use Cannabis for a Less Painful Period

In This Article

Here’s the honest to goodness truth of it: I’m not an expert on cannabis for PMS. In fact, I’m not an expert on cannabis in general. And while I could blame this on the fact I grew up in a state where smoking weed was illegal (not that that stopped anyone), my hunch is it has more to do with that one time in Amsterdam when, after consuming an astonishingly potent space cake (note: “Cake” might have actually been plural), I woke up the next morning high as a kite, proceeded to get lost in the cobblestoned streets of Leiden, proceeded to take the wrong train *not* to the airport, and thus, ultimately missed my flight back to Galway, Ireland, where I was living at the time. And as my first time experimenting with the stuff, it wasn’t, shall we say, ideal. So fast-forward four years later and here I am living in Los Angeles (where taking a hit is as normal as bringing your dog into Whole Foods) with a bad taste in my mouth for weed—very un-Angeleno to say the least.

However, that was prior to last month when I had an interesting, out-of-the-box opportunity to take a tour of MedMen—a leading L.A. cannabis management and investment firm with premium retail locations across Los Angeles and Southern California. The goal: to sleuth out the dispensary’s well-fed crop of cannabis-infused wellness products. (If you need a mental visual, it’s basically the Apple store of marijuana and marijuana-infused products.) And, lo and behold, I found the glittering goldmine of cannabis-enriched products to help with PMS, which, while that wasn’t my initial goal, was a standout trend nonetheless. So since no one I know particularly enjoys a painful period, I took some notes and talked to the experts. Can CBD- and THC-rich products lend relief when it comes to PMS symptoms? And perhaps more importantly, do professionals in the health field recommend them? I was curious, and frankly, I thought you would be too. Keep reading to find out what experts think about cannabis for PMS and, if you happen to live in a state where marijuana is legalized, which products we (and the staff at MedMen) think ought to be at the top of your period’s wish list.

CBD + THC Decoded

According to the experts at MedMen, there are more than 100 different chemical compounds in cannabis called cannabinoids—the all-stars being tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). “THC is the psychoactive element that produces feelings of euphoria or the ‘high,'” one of the official spokespeople explains to me, while CBD is associated with some of the more medicinal and reparative effects, such as decreased inflammation, pain management, anxiety reduction, and improved sleep. In fact, Kiana Reeves, a woman’s health advocate, doula, somatic sex educator, and Chief Brand Educator at Foria, laments, “THC also has incredible pain relieving benefits and studies show all of these compounds work best together, otherwise known as the entourage effect. For certain medical conditions, having THC in the formula is essential (for others not as much), but trace amounts are still beneficial. Currently the legal limit for THC in CBD products is less than .3 %

“CBD has been scientifically shown to increase levels of anandamide, a neurotransmitter and the main cannabinoid that is produced by the human body, which can reduce pain and inflammation and can also boost levels of adenosine, another neurotransmitter which plays a key role in inflammation,” says MedMen.

How Do They Work?

But what exactly happens within the body after both compounds are ingested? And on a more specific note, how does any of this have to do with debilitating PMS symptoms like cramps, sleeplessness, anxiety, and the like? Well, this is where it gets scientific (i.e., complicated and interesting), so I reached out to Adam Friedman, MD, FAAD, at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

After confirming to me that the best-known and most-studied cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), Friedman dove straight into the science of the compounds—exactly what I was craving amid the world’s murky swirl of stigmas, associations, and opinions on the topic of marijuana (and whether or not it has a legal place in our health system and everyday lifestyle.)

“Interestingly, it was the study of marijuana that initially led to the groundbreaking discovery of the human endocannabinoid system (meaning, we make our very own cannabinoids and receptors for them, which make up an extraordinary biological network that plays a role in everything from sensations of pain and itch to mood, inflammation regulation, and wound healing). Essentially, it’s the gold star of drugs,” Friedman tells us. But wait, there’s more.

THC and CBD have very different properties, as they selectively go after each of the respective endocannabinoid receptors in the body, CB1 and CB2. CB1 is found throughout the central nervous system, which is why THC does its thing when smoked or eaten. “Think of it this way,” Friedman puts it: “Cannabinoid receptors are present in pain circuits from the peripheral sensory nerve endings (fingertips) all the way up to the brain, thereby impacting the transmission and interpretation of sensations like pain and itch. The CB2 receptors, however, are found all throughout the immune system.” Which is precisely why, he says, the substance is widely loved and praised for its ability to manage inflammation and wound healing. And since CBD goes after that one particular receptor, it lacks the psychoactive effects commonly attributed to marijuana.

“We are learning more about these receptors every day, and it’s possible that the activation of either can have a similar effect on pain, just through different mechanisms,” Friedman continues. “Therefore, many of the studies in animals and the few in humans use a combination of both THC and CBD to reach an optimal effect depending on the indication.” (Thus why the majority of the cannabis-infused products on the market contain at least a little bit of both.)

So—Cannabis for PMS

“Cannabis- and CBD-infused products are the next big trend in reproductive health because they are so effective and relatively safe at the concentrations found in many commercial products,” neuroscientist and holistic wellness expert Leigh Winters tells me. The major key: the quality and sourcing of the products play a huge role in its safety and ability to help with PMS symptoms. “The truth is that the relief you can expect really depends on the quality of the product. If you have unbearable cramping, CBD products can alleviate those painful bouts of searing pain that leave you unproductive and unable to focus on anything else. CBD has been demonstrated to promote muscle relaxation while reducing stress and inflammation. Within a few minutes of using a topical product or ingesting, you’ll feel relief.”

And while some Western medical experts are still very much off-board, (one OBGYN explicitly telling me she would never recommend the use of cannabis for period relief, as menstruation is an inflammatory process and therefore anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) are the optimal drug of choice), it’s a viewpoint (while still fair and valid) that seems to represent the minority.

Again, Friedman who is exceptionally well-versed in the *often* gray area lends some expertise: “Interestingly, there is definitely evidence that women with severe cramping associated with endometriosis have an impaired endocannabinoid system. What investigators demonstrated was that those with severe pain actually had lower expression of the endocannabinoid receptors as compared to those with mild pain, and in turn churned out higher levels of endocannabinoids to compensate (too bad it had little impact). This suggests cannabinoids are important in the management of menstrual pain.” Translated: This could explain why some women may have more painful cramping than others. But again, it’s just one piece of the puzzle.

With that in mind, Friedman breaks down CBD’s PMS benefits a bit more explicitly:

1. As an anti-inflammatory, CBD can limit the degree of inflammation and swelling, which can both lead to pain.

2. CBD impacts specific temperature-controlling nerve receptors called vanilloid receptors (TRPV), through which it can then desensitize pain nerve fibers.

Professional Thoughts on Products

As you may know (or as you’re soon to find out), high-quality and reliably sourced cannabis products will cost you a pretty penny. So is it worth it? To get a scientific and medical opinion on the concern, I asked both Winters and Friedman which (if any) kinds of cannabis-infused products they’d recommend for PMS relief. The consensus: Yes, cannabis-enriched products can most certainly be used for PMS. The rub: some might have more efficacy than others.

“I always recommend a period-relief CBD tincture because it’s easy to integrate into an existing routine and effective,” Winters tells us. “While there’s an unfortunate dearth of clinical data studying these new formulations and products, tinctures seem to anecdotally win out among all product offerings. Many tinctures come with specific instructions, but you can either put a few drops under your tongue or add a dropperful (sometimes more) to a glass of water or tea. I’m also a big fan of topical CBD salve that you can massage on the lower abdomen. The relief of a topical cream or salve will likely not be as immediate as that of a tincture, but a gentle massage can greatly ameliorate discomfort. In my opinion, the jury is out on the ‘weed tampon’ until more research is done on the trace amounts of THC it contains and how the body reacts to long-term use.” Though, Reeves says there is a lot of anecdotal evidence suggesting cannabis suppositories are one of the most effective ways to support menstrual pain. “The cannabinoids are absorbed locally into the tissues that are inflamed and cramping thereby providing direct relief. There is a study underway investigating this with a Harvard research physician, hopefully publishing at the end of the year,” she says. Good to know.

Friedman elaborates, “First off, many of the over-the-counter CBD-containing creams have other scientifically proven analgesic compounds like menthol, camphor, and capsaicin, so it’s hard to know what’s doing the heavy lifting. Second, we have a good amount of animal data, but not many human studies, where topically applied cannabinoids are concerned. So to be honest, who is to know without the clinical science,” Friedman tells us. That being said, he reassures us these types of treatments (again, if high-quality and trustworthy) certainly won’t hurt you, and it’s worth experimenting if you’re interested in an alternative way to treat PMS symptoms. (And live in a state or region where these types of products are legalized, of course.)

All in all, and despite the fact that the taboo surrounding marijuana is perhaps still stronger than many would like, the future seems to be rather bright medicinally speaking, and as both experts confirmed, knowledge is power.

“I think the consumer has more power than he or she realizes,” Friedman says. “There is untapped potential that needs to be explored, and the consumer should feel free to encourage local, federal, and industry sources to dive deeper to fully elucidate how best to use these medical agents. Public opinion matters.”

“Everyone has a different opinion about CBD and THC, but the tide is certainly turning as more people and medical establishments have come to accept the medicinal component of the cannabis sativa plant,” Winters corroborates. “CBD is not weed—these products will not get you high. Plants can heal, but they can also harm. Always consult with a doctor or herbalist before trying any cannabis-based product or if you have an adverse reaction, but yes, the health paradigms are definitely shifting on the topic,” she concludes.

So with a better understanding of cannabis and its use for PMS under our belts, we thought it’d be fun to ask the experts at MedMen what their best-selling products are in the name of a less-painful period. And while the majority aren’t available to buy online (unless the product is derived from “agricultural hemp” which isn’t, technically speaking, considered “marijuana” under the Controlled Substances Act) you can find them at your local MedMen store or countless other dispensaries around the U.S.

5 Common Drugs To Avoid When Taking CBD

By Evelyn Valdez

Table of Contents:

CBD or cannabidiol has been recently popularized due to its numerous medical benefits. The recent passing of the Farm Bill in 2018 has spurred a lot of public interest since CBD provides an alternative to many drugs today. This has caused a significant amount of research to prove CBD’s legitimacy and place in the medical industry.

CBD oil has been used to treat and help many medical illnesses ranging from issues such as pain and inflammation to anxiety. Even though some may doubt CBD’s effectiveness since it can have positive effects in many different ways, many studies have shown that CBD has been both productive and safe to consume.

However, like anything we take into our bodies, there are some unintended risks and side effects when not used properly.

5 Over-the-counter drugs that compete with CBD

Drugs to avoid with CBD

Drug Name Working Ingredient Purpose Compete with CBD
Tylenol Acetaminophen Mild pain and fevers Yes
Advil Ibuprofen Reduce Pain Yes
Motrin Ibuprofen Pain and fever reducer Yes
Walgreens Wal-Finate Chlorpheniramine Allergy relief Yes
CVS Allergy Relief Chlorpheniramine Allergy relief Yes

1) Tylenol

Tylonel is one of the most commonly used pain relievers. This over the counter medicine’s main ingredient is acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is used to treat mild pain and fevers.

Acetaminophen conflicts with CBD when taken together. Both are processed through CYP450, making each drug less effective when processed.

2) Advil

Have you heard anyone say take an advil when something is wrong? Advil is one of the most commonly purchased over the counter medicines. The working ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is used to reduce the hormones that cause inflammation.

Ibuprofen is one of the drugs that interacts with the CYP450. When a drug like Advil and CBD are both ingest, they compete to accomplish the same goal, reduce pain.

3) Motrin

Motrin is Advil’s direct competitor. Similar to Advil, their working ingredient utilizes ibuprofen. Ibuprofen has been a staple when treating pain. Similar to Advil, Motrin is processed through the CYP450. The efficiency of the CYP450 is diminished when multiple drugs are run through its system. CBD targets a lot of the same problems.

4) Walgreens Wal-Finate Allergy Relief Tablets

Walgreens is one of the largest pharmacy chains in America. Their Walgreens brand allergy relief tablets known as Wal-Finate Allergy Relief Tablets is widely used for common allergies. The working ingredient in their product is chlorpheniramine. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine and is processed through the CYP450. By taking CBD with this allergy relief tablet, the effectiveness can be diminished.

5) CVS Health 4-Hour Allergy Relief

Similar to how Advil and Motrin are rivals, CVS is the leading competition with Walgreens. Both powerhouses have their own brand of medicine. CVS Health 4-Hour Allergy Relief uses the active ingredient chlorpheniramine to combat allergies as well. CVS brand allergy medicine is also under the list of drugs that can conflict with CBD when both taken.

The Cytochrome P-450 System

The Cytochrome P450, also known as CYP450, is an enzyme family that can be found in the liver. Enzyme’s purposes are to break down specific things. Cytochrome P450 job is specifically to break down drugs that are introduced into our body.

This enzyme is involved in metabolizing over 60% of drugs.

Doctors use CYP450 to gauge the appropriate dosages of medications based on the processing time it takes for the drugs to be active in the system. They calculate the averages of how fast the drugs are processed through the Cytochrome P450.

If only one drug is being ingested and the CYP450 system is healthy, then these averages provide accurate dosage information. Certain substances or an unhealthy CYP450 system can affect the processing times by either making drugs metabolize slower or faster than they would on their own.

Accurate dosage information depends on what drug is being ingested and if the CYP450 system is healthy and optimal. Different or multiple substances along with an unhealthy CYP450 system can dramatically change the time the specific drug’s processing time.

Scientists recommend to only take in one active drug at a given time in order to optimize your systems efficiency.

Here is a common list of drugs that are taken in our society. You might recognize many of these drugs as either over the counter drugs or prescribed medicines. The following drugs interact with the CYP450 system.

The following drugs interact with the CYP450:

  • Steroids
  • HMG CoA reductase inhibitors
  • Calcium channel blockers
  • Antihistamines – allergy relief medicines like CVS / Walgreens Allergy-relief
  • Prokinetics
  • HIV antivirals
  • Acetaminophen – Tylenol
  • Immune modulators
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Antiarrhythmics
  • Antibiotics
  • Anesthetics
  • Antipsychotics
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-epileptics
  • Beta blockers
  • PPIs
  • NSAIDs – ibuprofen medicines like Advil / Motrin
  • Angiotensin II blockers
  • Oral hypoglycemic agents
  • Sulfonylureas

Why should these drugs be avoided with CBD?

Clinical research has found that CBD inhibits the CYP3A4 and CYP2D6 enzymes. These enzymes are found in liver along with the CYP450. These enzymes can alter the way your body processes drugs. Since CBD may inhibit those enzymes, this can ultimately slow down the metabolization of drugs.

CBD can decrease the lifespan of the prescribed drug when it is induces a CYP enzyme. This thus causes more of the enzyme to be produced.

The CYP450 system metabolizes over 60% of prescribed drugs that enters the system. CBD or cannabinoids may inhibit the enzymes found in the system. This means that prescribed drugs can have a slower time to metabolize, ultimately affecting how your body takes in those drugs.

Final thoughts

The reason why this is important is to ensure that you are receiving the optimum benefits of whichever medicine or supplement you are taking. Although taking these drugs while taking CBD is not dangerous or detrimental, taking both can slow or lower the efficiency.

This is counterproductive because you do not want to be taking more drugs or medicine than your body needs and overload your body. For a full list of drugs, check out our CBD drug interactions article which explains everything you need to know about CBD and other drugs.

Whenever something is wrong, you should always discuss with your primary physician whether or not a medicine is right for you. Every medicine interacts with different medicines in different ways. This will help alleviate risks and bad reactions that CBD or any other drugs may have.

Certain drugs compete with the same body systems that CBD interacts with. Avoid stacking these together!

Can CBD Oil Be Taken with Ibuprofen? [What the Science Says]

Pain and inflammation are part of life. If you’re someone who struggles with pain often, then ibuprofen is probably a good friend of yours. In recent times, however, more and more folks are turning to CBD oil to help manage pain in a more natural way.

This raises the question – can CBD oil be taken with ibuprofen?

Let’s take a look…

CBD Oil vs. Ibuprofen: How Does Ibuprofen Manage Pain?

Ibuprofen is one of the most common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), first discovered in 1961. Today, it’s an active ingredient in numerous over-the-counter pain-relief drugs, including household names like Motrin and Brufen. Ibuprofen is very effective at eliminating most forms of pain that result from inflammation. It also works well as a fever reducer.

Ibuprofen works by blocking a specific type of hormone known as prostaglandin. Unlike normal hormones, prostaglandins are not secreted by any kind of gland. Rather, they form via chemical reaction at the site they’re needed. This is typically a site in which there has been infection or tissue damage (hence the resulting pain, inflammation, fever, etc).

Ibuprofen limits the number of enzymes produced by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). This results in decreased prostaglandin release when the body experiences injury, leading to lowered inflammation and pain.

It’s important to note that ibuprofen comes with some serious potential side effects, especially when taken in large quantities. Some of these include heartburn, dizziness, high blood pressure, stroke, ulcers (stomach bleeding), and heart attack.

What Makes CBD Different?

Cannabis has been consumed for centuries to help alleviate pain, and now scientists are aiming to find the link between cannabinoids and their anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) potential.

As one of more than 100 cannabinoids found inside the cannabis plant, CBD offers many potential health benefits without causing users to feel “high.” The primary difference between CBD and ibuprofen is the way in which they interact with pain response pathways. CBD binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors, while ibuprofen blocks the COX-2 from producing extra prostaglandins.

The analgesic mechanism of CBD is complex and not as well understood as that of ibuprofen. However, it appears to offer pain relief by inhibiting the action of neurotransmitters.

The analgesic mechanism of CBD is complex, and not as well understood as that of ibuprofen.

According to a 2018 publication in Frontiers of Pharmacology, cannabinoids (like CBD) have an inhibitory effect on neurotransmitters and neuropeptides that are involved in the “activation of descending inhibitory pain pathways, [as well as] reduction of neural inflammation.”

So, as you can see, the differences between CBD and ibuprofen for pain relief are quite distinct. Of course, ibuprofen and CBD are often not enough by themselves to combat pain completely. This leads many to want to use the two drugs in combination. But is using ibuprofen and CBD oil together safe?

How Does CBD Interact with Ibuprofen?

Currently, not much is known about how CBD could interact with other medications – including ibuprofen. More research needs to be done, but research has shown that CBD poses inhibitory action on some enzymes that galvanize drug metabolism.

This means that the risk of experiencing adverse side effects linked to ibuprofen use may increase when the drug is used in conjunction with CBD.

When looking at CBD drug interactions, there are two basic categories:

  • Those that can create a dangerous interaction and therefore, should never be used in conjunction with CBD
  • Those that require you to be cautious when using the two together

Ibuprofen falls into the second category – you should be cautious when using it together with CBD. Since the interaction between the two may either increase or decrease how quickly liver enzymes are able to break down drugs, the overall effects of the ibuprofen may be reduced or intensified.

Dosing and Timing Could Influence How CBD Interacts with Ibuprofen (And Other NSAIDs)

The time at which you take both CBD and ibuprofen may influence how the two drugs interact in your body. This is because spacing out doses of medication helps to reduce the workload on the liver.

For instance, depending on a drug’s half-life (and the dose of the drug), it has the potential to inhibit liver enzymes for a variable timeframe. Therefore, liver enzymes could regain sufficient function by the time the second drug (i.e. CBD) is taken.

The risk of experiencing adverse drug interactions may be lower if you consume ibuprofen and CBD at different times of the day.

The dosage used may also have an effect on any potential interaction of ibuprofen with CBD. When large amounts of CBD and ibuprofen are used together, there may be an increased risk of danger (such as increased stomach bleeding). Some medical experts have speculated that taking low amounts of CBD doesn’t seem to affect the way the liver metabolizes ibuprofen.

Of course, it’s worth noting that everyone responds to drugs differently. Some individuals may be sensitive to certain substances, while others may have little to no reaction. Ultimately, how the body processes medication – and the effect it has – is very much influenced by genetics, body size, age, and so on.

Final Thoughts on CBD and Ibuprofen

While taking low amounts of ibuprofen and CBD will likely not produce severe adverse effects on the body, more research needs to be conducted on the topic. Due to interaction with enzyme activity, there is the potential that CBD may either intensify or reduce the effects of ibuprofen.

Ultimately, it’s best to consult with a doctor or healthcare provider before using CBD oil in conjunction with ibuprofen. They will be able to help you decide whether it’s safe to use CBD oil, and may also be able to offer medical advice regarding the dosage of CBD oil that may be effective without causing any adverse effects.

A lot of people take CBD oil with ibuprofen for pain relief. But is it safe? Here, we explain everything you need to know.
